Mumbai: Acclaimed ghazal singer Jagjit Singh died on Monday in Mumbai. The 70-year old was admitted in Mumbai's Lilavati hospital after he suffered brain hemorrhage last month. He underwent two surgeries and was on life support.

Born on February 8, 1941, 'the ghazal king' was a singer, composer, activist and entrepreneur. He has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali. Jagjit Singh entered the music circuit at a time which was primarily dominated by Pakistani ghazal singers, and Indian singers were considered relatively lesser authentic than their Pakistani counterparts.

Unlike other ghazal singers, Singh did not hesitate in lending his voice for films. His silky voice ruled during early 80's in films like Prem Geet, Saath Saath and Arth. However, his major work is spread over more than 60 filmy and non filmy albums.

Jagjit Singh was also known for modern approach and infusion of technology in the traditional art of ghazal singing. Singh was the first Indian music director to use the technique of multi-track recording for his album 'Beyond Time'.

Recipient of Padma Bhushan award, Jagjit Singh was the man behind making the ghazal genre available and understandable to all. Prior to Singh, ghazal singing was considered as an elite art, which was difficult for the common mass to understand due to high class Urdu and Persian.

Jagjit Singh broke this myth by coming up with songs such as 'Kaagaz ki kashti', 'Chaak jigar ke', 'Kal chadhanvi ki raat thi', and 'Shaam se aankh me name si hai'. He mixed the words of legends like Ghalib, Qateel Shifai, Firaq Gorakhpuri, Nida Fazli and Sudarshan Faakir with melodious indigenous tunes and achieved a state where nothing came in between him and his listeners.

Later when television started showcasing music videos, he was among one of the prominent members of the music fraternity to avail the facility. He again came up with brilliant albums such as 'Face to Face', 'Marasim', 'Aaeena', and 'Dil Kahin Hosh Kahin'.

Jagjit Singh had also given his voice for ex-prime minister Atal Bihari Bajpayee poems in the albums 'Nayi Disha' and 'Samvedna'.

Jagjit Singh is survived by his wife Chitra Singh, with whom he had produced several record breaking albums. Their only son Vivek Singh had died in a road accident in 1990

  6. Oblivion Dear, We must all go back to our Maker someday. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He is the Almighty, the Compassionate. He will be gentle in judgement, I do not doubt, for we human beings are always limited in our choices. Let us speak no word of ill now that one of us has gone.

Dear Mirza Ghalib, i didn't speak word of ill, I am saying, Let us not choose ill for our souls--- for our minds --- Let us not damage our souls, our voices, our mind, our energies , our hearts for a thing which makes us permanent sick --- a thing which makes us victim of illusion --- Let us see a sign

he suffered brain hemorrhage last month.

  8. oblivion, he was seventy years old. Anything can happen at that age. We can't interpret the cause of death to mean he led the wrong kind of life. Had he died of cancer, what would you have said then? Ob, listen, he was given this great gift of his marvellous voice. Would you have had him scoff at this gift and not made full use of it? Would his soul have benefitted from that show of ingratitude? Somehow, I doubt it very much.

  10. Indeed, he was. A very great ghazal singer, rangbaaz.

Oblivion, in continuation from another blog. Our faith is simple. It is not a problem in higher maths and should never be turned into one either. Of course I'm a free thinker, whatever you mean by that. Or would you have me be a fettered thinker, my thought processes in unending chains? From God we come to God we must return is the absolute truth. Not a single soul to have graced this earth will escape His examination.

    MG,

It is serious matter. I have posted at the end of second page on Steve thread about our attitude after death of people like Jagjit. We cannot ask for their forgiveness or blessing for their soul. We can only ask for guidance for their remaining family members. A clear cut Ayat came in Quran when Prophet was admonished after he SAS visited grave of his mother and asked for blessing for her soul.

  13. If you say so AR. Nonetheless, my human conscience tells me that each time someone dies to my knowledge, irrespective of their origin or faith, I must consign their soul to the mercy of God. I ask neither for forgiveness, nor for any blessing, I pray for mercy, that is all.

AR, you will correct me if I'm wrong according to the tenets of dogmatic Islam, but from what I have been told, God will judge each of us according to the merits of each particular case and that includes the religion the person might have belonged to during his or her lifetime. In other words, heaven is not to be regarded as a place meant exclusively for deserving Muslims.

It certanly includes Muslim-those who submitted to the will of Almightry, that followed the other scriptures/prophets before but not after the final message was delivered.

Mirza Ghalib, He was prominent figure in the industry of music, God uses his fame to teach lesson to those who still are wasting their lives -- their minds --- their voices in this pretty business --- The message of God is very clear " He has done injustice with his mind as well minds of billion -- See, Mirza Ghalib, It's a sign of God --- Music is infinite injustice --- infinite cruelty -- mortal meanness to mind -- I hope you would get the point

Oblivion, in continuation from another blog. Our faith is simple.

Mirza Ghalib, You don't know simple faith, Faith is to scarify and you are scarifying your soul and mind at the altar of desires --- You choose all this against your faith --- What is faith, to live a trustworthy life --

Of course I'm a free thinker, whatever you mean by that.

you don't know how dangerous free thinking is to mind, like a boat in endless sea with no sailor

From God we come to God we must return is the absolute truth. Not a single soul to have graced this earth will escape His examination.

Off coure it is true, God favores you this life -- which is trust of God --- we shouldn't mistrust that trust

  25. Oblivion, let me begin with you. One out of four points on which we might agree? Well, that's progress at least. We've had this dicussion so many times already in the past. Our language is not the same, our understanding is not the same and our approach is worlds apart. Yet, Oblivion, my respect for you hasn't suffered in anyway. Just so we agree to differ in amity and peace.

SufiSoul, if we are sad at the moment, let us be that. It is our right. Many of us have lost a friend in time of need. Sectarian considerations do not enter into it.

I salute junaid's perceptive comments. If Indian "wannabe" media have stayed off reporting fully on Jagjit's death, it's because we know he was a thorn in their side since Jagjit always took the part of Muslims over that of Hindus. Also, please, no one should forget Jagjit was the person who most helped our own exquisite Mehdi Hassan, in his penurious old age.

Ajhons gave us a ferociously ironic comment. What if we reversed the order, Ajhons? We'd also end up with interesting consequences.

Exposed offered us a chance to hear Nahid Akhtar sing a few lines from a Jagjit ghazal and mariabashir provided us with an illuminating couplet and a chance to listen to Jagjit's profound rendition of Iss dunya mein.

Last but certainly not least, Musicien, thanks for choosing some of the best of the ghazals for posting here. They are all classics of their kind, specially the first one which is how I first got to know Chitra and Jagjit many years ago.

Sorry to have taken up so much of your time.
