@UmeR
"Only the mosque was left standing!"Silly statement. May be it was -- as you can see -- because the mosque was at the HIGHEST point and probably built the strongest. And I am sure there was more than one mosque in that town. What happened to them?? Destroyed as well!!!
If what you are hinting at then may I ask why didn't ALL mosques survive????
BTW: My hometown survived as well (and not just its mosque) although every place around it -- north, south, east, wast -- was destroyed. It is two miles from Bhong, Distt Rahimyar Khan which is featured daily on tv these days and is under 15 feet of water (see last night's Live with Talat, e.g.) Is my town "holy"? Far from it. In fact it is one of the most despicable places and would have been a perfect target for any 'biblical' flood...yet it survived.
Go figure! ;-)

nota,
The whole scale destruction reminds us of a authentic Hadith. Allah SBT ordered the angels to destroy a city like the one you say is far from being "holy". The angels return back and say that there is a very pious man in the city and ask Allah SBT to confirm the order. Allah SBT ordered the angels to start the destruction of the house of that pious man first and then the rest of the city. The lesson here is that the pious man was living isolated and did not bother to know what is happening to others around him and never ventured out to admonish the others. We are duty bound to make dawa to others who are commiting sins.
nota, Are you doing your share of dawa?
