You all have seen the war of PML N & MQM
    Many truths came out.
    A question
We here at internet telling people about the the illness of Altaf Hussain but this media didn't speak a word.
They are combined in hiding crimes of MQM and land mafia of Islamabad. They are insulting leaders on regular bases and playing a choice game.
This is not an independent media.
    What do you say.

  2. Our media is on sale!
If you got the money which all parties have then they can buy anyone.
    All parties buy journalists/TV anchormen

For once I agree with @sweettruth. But it is not just 'our' media -- media EVERYWHERE is for sale and that should not be a surprise. They are a business -- a fact we often forget -- and the product is "news". And often times they produce "news" (or suppress it) on order ("specification" of the client). Let me take the liberty here to place before you some quotes about the business from people in the business:

The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum – even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there’s free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate. ” – Noam Chomsky

“News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress, the rest is just advertising” – Lord Northcliffe, British Press Baron

"Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have." - Richard Salent, former President of CBS News.

"We tell the people what they need to know, not what they want to know." - Frank Sesno, CNN News

“The two greatest obstacles to democracy in the United States are, first, the widespread delusion among the poor that we have a democracy, and second, the chronic terror among the rich, lest we get it.” — Edward Dowling, Editor and Priest, Chicago Daily News, 28jul41 (True in 1941 and true today)

"Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper." - Thomas Jefferson, letter to Nathaniel Macon

"You can crush a man with journalism." - William Randolph Hearst, American Media Baron (and he crushed any)

"With all the mass media concentrated in a few hands, the ancient faith in the competition of ideas in the free market seems like a hollow echo of a much simpler day. - Kingman Brewster, Jr., President of Yale University

"We don't print the truth. We don't pretend to print the truth. We print what people tell us. It's up to the public to decide what's the truth." — Ben Bradley, while Executive Editor of the Washington Post.

"There is no such thing at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of a journalist is to destroy truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals for rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men.

    We are intellectual prostitutes."
    - John Swinton, the former Chief of Staff of the New York Times, called by his peers, "The Dean of his profession," when asked in 1953 to give a toast before the NY Press Club

"You don't realize how little accuracy there is in network TV reporting until they cover a story in your hometown." - Robert Brault, a free-lance writer

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

"Freedom of the press in Britain is freedom to print such of the proprietor's prejudices as the advertiser's won't object to." - Helen Swaffer

"Freedom of the press is limited to those who own one." - A. J. Liebling.

"Journalism could be described as turning one's enemies into money." - Craig Brown

"The media know exactly what they’re doing, focusing our attention on Arsenio’s hairdo. We need to keep our brains brimming with rubbish. If we didn’t, we might think about things." - Cynthia Heimel

"Thanks to my solid academic training, today I can write hundreds of words on virtually any topic without possessing a shred of information which is how I got a good job in journalism." - Dave Barry

"The idea that media is there to educate us, or to inform us, is ridiculous because that's about tenth or eleventh on their list" - Abbie Hoffman

"Editor: a person employed by a newspaper, whose business it is to separate the wheat from the chaff, and to see that the chaff is printed." - Elbert Hubbard

"The bigger the information media, the less courage and freedom they follow. Bigness means weakness." - Eric Sevareid

"The press, like fire, is an excellent servant, but a terrible master." - James Fenimore Cooper

"I am unable to understand how a man of honor could take a newspaper in his hands without a shudder of disgust." - Charles Baudelaire

"People tend to forget that my presence runs counter to their best interests. And it always does. That is one last thing to remember. Writers are always selling somebody out." - Joan Didion, National Public Radio

"It takes great self-confidence to write a newspaper column. Some might say it takes arrogance. Be that as it may, my willingness to pronounce on a great many matters of which I have little or no knowledge is one of my prime qualifications for this trade." - Russell Baker, The New York Times

"The four pillars of wisdom that support journalistic endeavors are: lies, stupidity, money-grubbing, and ethical irresponsibility." - Marlon Brando

"The TV business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and p!mps run free and good men die like d*gs." - Hunter S. Thompson

"The fact that a man is a newspaper reporter is evidence of some flaw of character." - President Lyndon Johnson

"A newspaper is not the place to go to see people actually earning a living, though journalists like to pretend they never stop sweating over a hot typewriter. It is much more like a brothel - short, rushed bouts of really enjoyable activity interspersed with long lazy stretches of gossip, boasting, flirtation, drinking, telephoning, strolling about the corridors sitting on the corner of desks, planning to start everything tomorrow. Each of the inmates has a little specialty to please the customers. The highest paid ones perform only by appointment; the poorest take on anybody, The editors are like madams - soothing, flattering, disciplining their naughty, temperamental staff, but rarely obliged to satisfy the clients personally between the printed sheets." - from a UPI Washington Bureau Manager

"The First Law of Journalism: to confirm existing prejudice, rather than contradict it." - Alexander Cockburn

"Once a newspaper touches a story, the facts are lost forever, even to the protagonists." - Norman Mailer

Coming to your comment, they hide crimes not just of Altaf Hussain (surprised you didn't mention the other guy whose illness was exposed -- Shahbaz Sharif who was (is still?) in London just this week for a "medical checkup". One must not forget media's primary job is to cover-up, NOT inform. Why do you think all the powerful ones runs newspapers/channels? Why do you think Malik Riaz started a paper? Mian Mansha (Pakistan Today -- see Arif Nizami, 'the respected journalist' kissing @ss of his masters under the link)? Land-grabber Mian Amir (Dunya TV) Hashwani is the newest to come into the field and see how that vile character is described by one of the respected personalities who considers himself a soldier against corruption:

I am pleased to announce that I will be a colleague and a co-worker with some of you very soon in my capacity of ‘CEO and President’ for an upcoming Media Group.

This Group, is a Media House that will bring out quality TV channels, Dailies and Periodicals besides establishing of Media University of international standard. But honestly none of this would really have been possible, if there was not a Group behind my dream.

In the forefront of this initiative is the man leading this Global consortium, whom I must thank for his having agreed to venture in this media enterprise. Mr. Sadruddin Hashwani a name you are all familiar with. Someone we have all come to respect as a man whose patriotism makes us proud, whose resolve makes us believe more in our own selves. A role model to have risen above the rest as a self made man who now wishes to set a precedence in media, reinventing, reinvigorating and reviving our industry bogged down by lethargy.

Mr. Hashwani leads this consortium of giants from the Middle East and Europe. A unique and impressive list of notable personalities and business conglomerates who have both put their resources and trust behind Mr. Hashwani and of course through him- in me, and through me- in and on all the working media professionals of Pakistan.

I must admit that this introduction to Mr. Hashwani or the international consortium is no justice. And I fail in introducing them to the hilt that they deserve an introduction, but I do intend on introducing them in more details that I shall share with all of you soon.

That is Dr Shahid Masood talking about one of the most corrupt individuals in our country. Do you think he doesn't know about Hashwani? Do you think he doesn't know that he has just become an employee of Gilani (again)? Of course he does but thrown a morsel his way, all of a sudden both Gilani and Hashwani turn into virgins in Dr SM's eyes. That is true of most journalists.

  17. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

    Quote from Media Reform Information Center;

In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly. In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation.

In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly, shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth.

  18. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

This talk on mass media 'reminds' me of the time when non-Muslims from the west came to the Muslim Emperor of the time (I think it was 'Akbar') for starting 'mass media' as a business. Muslims denied them.

Why ? Why did Muslims deny their request ? We need to take the time to ask the 'why' question.

For the very reason that which is happening among mankind today. Mass media and the people behind mass media have 'helped' to 'spread' 'wrong' information 'far and wide'. It has 'enabled' for misinforming people on a large scale, driving them to make wrong decisions, taking wrong actions on a mass scale.

Muslims understood 'perils' that came with 'having' mass media. This is why Muslims didn't want anything to do with it.

Muslims do not want to 'keep' mankind from 'making' 'progress'. In-fact Muslims 'enabled' mankind by 'financing' most all of the progress made in the 'medieval era'.

The misery, loss of life, spread of injustice all throughout the globe today, unjust wars that have gone on among mankind, unjust wars that are still going on today, and the unjust wars that threaten to go on in the future because of stuff propagated on mass media shows a 'long' 'history' of 'spread' of 'injustice' through mass media.

This history itself should be enough to convince mankind on its own on the perils of 'mass media', on 'spreading' 'wrong' 'information' (organized collection of 'data'), half information, half truths, false information.
