  1. Who is responsible for PIA disastrous?
I have hazy memories of a time when PIA was considered to be an exciting international and were exported to the Middle East and elsewhere to help launch other airlines that have since become award winners. One had thought for a while that the purchase of new airplanes and cosmetic changes in the staff as well as on the tailfins might signify a shift towards better times.

  2. When was the exact time in history that PIA was considered world class? Please educate the ignorant here.

  3. In March 1960, PIA became the first Asian airline to use jet aircraft when Boeing 707 services were introduced[citation needed]. The aircraft were wet leased from Pan American and in 1961 services were begun to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. In 1962, orders were placed for Boeing 720s, Fokker F27s and Sikorsky helicopters. One of PIA's Boeing 720s broke a world record that year, when it flew from London to Karachi non-stop in 6 hours, 43 minutes and 55 seconds during its delivery flight from Seattle, piloted by PIA's senior Captain Abdullah Baig, a record unbroken to this day.
In 1976, leased Boeing 747-200Bs came into service. In 1978, the airline bought their first Boeing 747-200BM aircraft. Also in 1978 the airline provided help to Somali Airlines, Air Malta and Yemenia and established a hotel management service in the United Arab Emirates. PIA leased two of its own Boeing 720s to Air Malta during the 70s.

The Fokker F27 was once the backbone of PIA's northern area flights in the 1990s [6]The 1980s began with the opening of a cargo centre in Karachi and the delivery of a new aircraft, Airbus A300B4-203. In 1981, a duty-free sales service was inaugurated. During 1982, the first C and D checks were carried out on the fleet in Karachi. In 1984, domestic night coach fare service was introduced to offer lower prices for low-income passengers. In 1985 the PIA Planetarium tourist attraction was inaugurated in Karachi and later in Lahore. In the same year, five Boeing 737-300s joined the fleet making PIA the first Asian operator of such a type. Two former PIA Boeing 720Bs now form part of the Planetarium's exhibition at Karachi and Lahore. In late 1987 and early 1988, flights were introduced to Malé and to Toronto Pearson International Airport, respectively. In 1989, the first women pilots started their career on passenger airplanes.

    Is that enough?

  4. You are enlightening us on the technicalities of flight. I'm sorry not to be more clear. I was referring to the service offered by PIA staff to those flying with PIA. Was this ever world-class?

From my experience service quality varies depending on class and/or skin color of a passenger.

But I prefer PIA service for three reasons:

    a) You feel relaxed with kids on board compared with none-desi flights

    b) Biryani/Food is better!

    c) You start to feel at home the moment you board the plane!

They may have the worst service, but it'll always remain my preference.

I would agree with shriq. PIA is certainly not that bad.

It may not be as good any more as British, Singapore, Emirates or Qatar Air. But it is still much better than Air India, Gulf Air, Kuwait, Biman, Air Lanka or even most american carriers.

    Dear Oriel,

It was PIA who had offered/given their planes to Emirates airlines ( which is now the best among few airlines). Staff of PIA is far better than other airlines & also the prices are not very high. Food quality @ PIA is also good & most important is HALAL Food. PIA till May ( as my last trip) was offering 55 KG bagge for international travellers. You can find history for its services on net as well but it was my personal observations which i shared with fellows.

  12. I think the key cause of deteriotion in PIA and other public sector organizations is lack of capital investment. Such big organizations can't continue for long times , specially in competitative environments , just on internally generated capital. e.g. emirates started its operations in 1985 with two leased planes and now is one of the biggest carriers in the world.Same story for all other big names where govt.'s are able to inject capitals in big terms. Looking at PIA , the only profitable routes on domestic trunks are lahore-khi and khi-isb (may be couple of more) but it has to serve some 25-30 destinations. Middle east used to good earning cows for PIA but with middle eastern airlines coming up , its too competative for a cash starved PIA.

And on top of that we have mis-management and all other problems as well.

"I think the key cause of deteriotion in PIA and other public sector organizations is lack of capital investment"

To run an organisation at international level where its a cut throat competition, additional invenstment in human resource training and latest infrastructure is required. I dont think it is provided to any of our organizations (ARMY is a BIG exception)

    'ARMY is a BIG exception'

Thats why army did biggest ever surrender of history after world wars. Right ?

BAhi, if u look at the ARMY , nation has been giving its blood to it for last 60 years, 80% of budget.

Please confine youself to PIA otherwise my dear moderator will jump in with a danda in hand.

Most people when dealing with problems in Pakistan go in all sorts of details which on the face may look relevant but are only the symptoms. The real problem is that Pakistanis are getting dumber and arrogant by the day and the rest just comes with it. People in west are not saints, they would also try to make money anyway they can but know that being corrupt or unprofessional will not get them what they want hence their relative honesty and professionalism.

    For reasons why Pakistanis are getting dumber here is a good article;

    http://blogs.tribune.com.pk/story/4971/are-pakistanis-really-becoming-dumber/

Its not just PIA, many institutions were working great in the pre-Islamist era. Now apart from Jihadi sector (official and unofficially official) what else is working or growing?
