Pakistan cuts NATO supply line after border firing

(52 posts)
  1. PARACHINAR, Pakistan (30.9.10) – Pakistan blocked a vital supply route for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan on Thursday in apparent retaliation for an alleged cross-border helicopter strike by the coalition that killed three Pakistani frontier troops.

The blockade appeared to be a major escalation in tensions between Pakistan and the United States.

A permanent stoppage of supply trucks would place massive strains on the relationship between the two countries and hurt the Afghan war effort. Even a short halt is a reminder of the leverage Pakistan has over the United States at a crucial time in the 9-year-old war.

By midmorning, a line of around 100 NATO vehicles was waiting to cross the border into Afghanistan, officials said.

"We will have to see whether we are allies or enemies," Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said of the border incident, without mentioning the blockade.

NATO said it was investigating Pakistani reports that coalition aircraft had mistakenly attacked its forces. The coalition has on at least one other occasion acknowledged mistakenly killing Pakistani security forces stationed close to the border.

Over the weekend, NATO helicopters fired on targets in Pakistan at least two times, killing several suspected insurgents they had pursued over the border from Afghanistan. Pakistan's government protested the attacks, which came in a month during which there have been an unprecedented number of U.S. drone missile strikes in the northwest, inflaming already pervasive anti-American sentiment among Pakistanis.

Another blogger has just pasted something similar above and has entitled his piece: Rahman Malik's Topi Drama.

The one interest of this article is that some small change in behaviour on our part. The question Natasha asks on her most recent thread is also an important one. Unfortunately I do not know the annswer. Do you, HK?

  13. Shimatoree, sorry to have shocked you. Was using Bo's language simply. As for my relations with the Pak army, over the past year or so, it has been a roller coaster affair. I can no longer understand how a self-respecting army can bomb its own people and allow invaders to do the same. I could not understand how this very same army could allow thousands to be submerged under water to save a few lousy planes, etc. My trust deficit towards them has grown so steadily, I must now admit to complete sovereign default.

    MG-

Any army is a professional organization. Each and every soldier is taught to follow orders. Based on the constitutional impreatives they follow orders.

The army is not a young prostitute that caters to each and every whim of either the politicians or others .
In Pakistan- the army recognises that they are the central institution that must maintain the country as no one else is.
Now it has happened that one senior pfficer( corrupt) like Musharraf was bought/ intimidated by those on the outside and you may call it a fault that those in teh army did not rebel- instead they followed orders.
That is what soldiers do and that is what they are taught to do.
Should they have rebeled against the 9/11 polcies of Musharraf. I think they should have but then I am expecting them to get away from what they are taught.

If you wish to have a thinking army- well then you have a problem.
The people who claim to be the thinking leaders are thinking with their back sides and getting rich by the minute.

Perhaps someone in the army will stand up but if they do not- I will not blame them because that is the nature of the breed- follow orders.

  17. shimatoree, You speak striaghtforwardly as is your wont. No beating about the bush. You are right to say the army is no prostitute. And yet TL is also right to claim it's not one, yet behaving like one. Come to think of it, a prostitute usually has some excuse for behaving the way she does, she has herself to feed and other dependents as well, perhaps. the Pak army has more money to its name than it knows what to with it.

I agree about Musharraf. His doings have half killed us. I started off from the principle, which still holds, that the army is the only remaining viable institution in this country. Do I want a thinking army, shimatoree? Yes, I do, God help me. And mainly I want an honest army. And also an army that does its job and is not simply at the beck and call of a foreign power which is trying to decimate us in small doses. Shimatoree, surely you can understand the great pain one might feel to have to acknowledge that really the slogan does fit the case: **** quom, **** fauj.

TL, For heaven's sake. Do behave from now on. We don't want to lose you as well to some foolish outburst. Thanks.

The army follows orders. It is trained to do that.
The responsibility for wrong decisions lies with the leadership of the country and there it must lie.

Evereyone wants the army to do this or that but at the same time-

1.You have everyone harping that they want help from the army but they do not want martial law.

2.The CJ could have set the train on the right tracks but did not make the decisions taht needed to be made to get this country on the right track. I ask why ? He could have taken SUO MOTO action against the missing person's case and the drone cases- but they hav not

3.The leaders of the opposition have not and are not doing their job to topple a corrupt and dishonest foriegn puppet regime.

4.The media is not willing to call a spade a spade. Everey day the media puts on their shows the same thieves and robbers and murderers and liars again and again and again.

Yes the army is not doing what honorable patriotic people want it to do but the army is folowing orders of the leadership.

There were afew people in the army and air force who did try to kill the abstard Musharraf- and guess what happened to them- death penalty.
And how many honorable and patriotic people came out in the streets to demonstrate in their favour and how many news papers and media channels made their case as their own and did the CJ agree to hear their case ? NO. He showed no guts.

I do not agree with what the army and airforce is doing to my own people and I have been bitching about it here since 2007- and guess what labels I have gotten.

So the best I will a recommend for everyone to buy a mirror that everyone can see their own face and face upto it.
The entire nation is corrupt- through and through.

You have seen the reactions from the pseudo-religious types to simple questions being raised here.

NATO says they killed 3 pakistani FC soldiers and critically injured 3 more in self defense and they 'apologize' . Pakistan should also shoot down at least 3 NATO choppers in 'self defense' and then should 'apologize' afterwards.

  22. shimatoree, you said that perfectly. I agree with you throughout. If we were talking about the army here, that did not mean we'd left out the CJ's shortcomings. Those were present in our minds too. The media, too, with all its tremendous power, have not inspired too much confidence in us either as a reliable partner for change. Last, but not least, we the people are also part and parcel of this culture of corruption which has suddenly seemed to have become our original birthright. I'm ashamed of myself and the elite of this country. And completely lost as to what changes we might be able to bring about.

dOctOr, excellent advice. If I were you, I'd send it straight off to GHQ. Or perhaps someone from there is reading these lines and will convey the message to the top brass.

I find it mind boggling when a nation like Pakistan which has lost so many lives in the process of independence should have to be bestowed with leaders that are the nost crooked both in the Military/civilian establishments and for what, so that we could have a few F16's and 30 year old military hardware like the Oliver Hazard Perry Class frigate and the civilians can have they Surrey/Jeddah Palaces.

These choppers must now be shot down forthwith without any if's or but's.

Army follows orders but whose orders? They give a damn about Zardari or Gillani. They follow COAS. You very convnently blame Musharaaf and CJ and ofcourse political leadership. What about present military leadership? Aren't they responsible for what's happening now? Why don't you mention Gen. Kiyani and Gen. Pasha when you mention drones and now NaTO air strikes?

    Posted 1 year ago on 30 Sep 2010 23:36 #
  25. I'm not satisfied with NATO. They need to strike well inside the border, let's say at the GHQ while Kiyani holds a staff meeting and at the parliament when in full session. That exercise, alone, is not an alarm strong enough to wake a hibernating bear.

Others above also spoke nothing but the truth. And saqib55, is probably right when he points out what we have for our protection is "an old and decrepit army", and the most servile in the world, I'd add without fail.

  28. Dozens of NATO oil tankers attacked in Pakistan (1.10.10)

SHIKARPUR, Pakistan – Suspected militants in southern Pakistan set ablaze more than two dozen tankers carrying fuel for foreign troops in Afghanistan on Friday, highlighting the vulnerability of the U.S.-led mission a day after Pakistan closed a major border crossing.

The Pakistani government shut the Torkham border in the northwest in apparent protest at a NATO helicopter incursion that killed three of its soldiers on the border. The events raised tensions between Pakistan and the United States, which have a close but often troubled alliance in the fight against militants.

The convoy of tankers attacked Friday was likely headed to a second crossing in southwest Pakistan that was not closed. It was not clear if the vehicles had been rerouted because of the closure at Torkham.

Around 80 percent of the fuel, spare parts, clothing and other non-lethal supplies for foreign forces in landlocked Afghanistan travel through Pakistan after arriving in the southern Arabian sea port of Karachi. The alliance has other supply routes to Afghanistan, but the Pakistani ones are the cheapest and most convenient.

Islamist militants occasionally attack NATO supply tankers in Pakistan, mostly in the northwest where their influence is stronger. Thursday's strike was in Sindh province, far from the border, and might be taken as a sign that the insurgents are expanding their reach.

  29. They droned away merrily last night again. The tribesmen have begun raising their voices in protest. And one small result of it all are these attacks on oil tankers. Perhaps we could invite Mr Kiyani over for a small talk so he could explain to us morons what exactly is happening in our country.

Gillani says who have other options if NATO does not formally apologizes,NATO already said they are 'sorry' for fc men's death and should be jointly investigated but won't apologize as they were acting in self defense. Visiting CIA chief is also threatening and says drone attacks won't stop.

Govt here should send a strong signal to west(just burning 30 oil tankers isn't enough), shoot down any helicopters that strays inside Pakistan. Seriously rethink about drones being allowed inside Pakistan.

  33. Al Pessin | Pentagon 30 September 2010

The Pentagon says a U.S. helicopter based in Afghanistan fired in self-defense during an incident that apparently caused the deaths of three Pakistani soldiers at a border post, and led Pakistan to close a key supply route.

The NATO command in Kabul says at least one of its helicopters crossed briefly into Pakistani airspace Thursday to fire on an insurgent position inside Afghanistan. Shortly afterward, the command says, the helicopter received small arms fire from the Pakistani side of the border, and returned fire.

The Pakistani Army says two helicopters crossed the border and fired on a Frontier Corps outpost 200 meters inside its territory. The statement says the helicopters shot at the troops first, and that they responded with rifle fire to indicate that NATO forces had entered Pakistani airspace. Pakistan says the helicopters fired two missiles, destroying the border post, killing three soldiers and wounding three others.

At the Pentagon, a senior spokesman, U.S. Marine Corps Colonel David Lapan, says the Pakistanis fired first and that the response should not be surprising.

"Even the statement that the Pakistanis put out indicated that their forces used rifle fire at the helicopters as a warning. And, well, if you fire at a helicopter in a combat zone, they'll usually take that as hostile and return fire," he said.

The NATO command in Kabul expressed condolences for the deaths of the Pakistani troops, and said the two sides are reviewing the incident to determine what happened.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is preventing NATO-contracted trucks from crossing into Afghanistan at the Torkham border post in the Khyber Pass. The crossing is an important part of the complex U.S. and NATO effort to keep their troops in Afghanistan supplied.

But Colonel Lapan says there has been no immediate impact from the Pakistani move.

"Right now, [it's] too soon to tell because, obviously, we don't know how long that might last. We are in discussions with the Pakistani government in the hope that we can resolve the issue through discussion," he said.

Lapan notes that the other crossing along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border remains open to NATO trucks, and that the alliance also has air routes and a northern land route to keep supplies flowing. The Pentagon says that overall, about half of the cargo needed by U.S. troops in Afghanistan flows through the two Pakistan border crossings.

  34. US May Unleash Microwave Weapon "Active Denial System" in Afghanistan
TAMPA, Fla. (June 17) -- A controversial nonlethal weapon that uses microwave energy to create intense pain is being considered for use in Afghanistan, AOL News has learned.

An Air Force military officer and a civilian employee at the Air Force Research Laboratory told AOL News at an industry conference here that the Active Denial System, which heats the top layer of skin via millimeter waves, was in Afghanistan for testing. The sources were not able to offer details on how or whether the weapon was being used in combat.

The weapon is designed to shoot an invisible beam of energy at people, creating an intense burning sensation that forces them to flee. The Air Force has called it the "goodbye effect." It has not been used before in military operations.

Nevertheless, using elliptical yet laudatory language, U.S. officials have characterized the drone strikes as "completely essential" and "the only game in town." As the nation reads "Obama's Wars," Bob Woodward's account of the contentious White House arguments over escalation in Afghanistan, this secret war especially needs scrutiny.

    O Muslims of Pakistan!

Cut the NATO supply line, the lifeline of the crusaders

Yet again, the Muslims of Pakistan faced the horrors of a wave of bombings in Pakistan. Muslims collected the flesh of the shattered bodies of men, women, children and the elderly in plastic bags. They lifted collapsed rubble in a frantic search for survivors. Funeral processions left from the houses, as orphans and widows held their heads in their hands, mourning for their losses. Within these hours of misery, Pakistan’s rulers yet again called for the Muslims to support in the war in the tribal areas and this time to expand it into in the Punjab, Pakistan’s most populous province, imitating exactly calls by American officials. And Pakistan’s rulers made this call as if they are not in any way to blame for the bombings and as if they are conducting the military operations for the sake of the Muslims. However, in reality the operations are all for one reason and one reason alone, to secure America’s occupation of Afghanistan. As for the vicious bombings, they are supervised by the Americans and made possible by Pakistan’s oppressor rulers, solely to justify the operations. Moreover, it is the oppressor rulers that ensure an uninterrupted supply line for the Western occupying forces through Pakistan itself, a lifeline for the crusaders to maintain their destructive presence in the region.

The oppressor rulers conduct the military operations to rescue the Americans after they invaded what is known as the “graveyard of the empires,” Afghanistan. The American kuffar faced fierce opposition from the Pushtoon Muslims who number over fifty million within this region, in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Moreover, America faces desertion from its so-called allies, who respond to its calls for more troops with calls for withdrawal. But rather than exploit the weakness of the Americans to end its tyrannical hegemony, which shatters nations in order to deprive them of their wealth, or at least leave America to sink in a quagmire of its own making, the oppressor rulers turn Pakistan upside down to rescue them, just like Musharraf before them. By doing so the oppressor rulers are bringing calamities upon the Muslims and their armed forces, the sixth largest armed forces in the world.

The oppressor rulers committed Pakistan’s Muslim armed forces to rescue America’s cowardly troops, who fall prey to mental illness through fear of the poorly armed groups of Muslims that resist their occupation. Some 2,273 Pakistani soldiers including 78 officers, two Major Generals and five brigadiers besides others, have lost their lives whilst 6,512 sustained injuries, even though the Western crusaders have only sacrificed 1,582 of their own troops. Moreover, as a further service to the enemies of Muslims, the oppressor rulers have divided and stretched Pakistan’s armed forces, the largest armed forces that the Ummah possesses, on three separate fronts. In response to American demands, the oppressor rulers engaged the armed forces in the tribal areas as a primary front. As a result of America opening the doors to India in Afghanistan, the Hindu State established consulates from where it supplies and trains insurgents in Baluchistan, opening another front against the Pakistan army. And as a consequence of America’s bolstering of India’s claims of Kashmir, the Hindu mushrikeen have increased in arrogance and oppression in Kashmir, refusing to withdraw their troops, engaging the Pakistan Army in yet another front. And in her ruthless bid to end any opposition to its hegemony in the region, America now seeks to deepen the crisis for the Pakistan Army, by demanding that America’s war of Fitna is expanded from the tribal areas into the Punjab and other areas within Pakistan.

As if this were not enough, the oppressor rulers provide a lifeline upon which the crusaders depend to fight the Muslims and maintain their presence in the region. Daily hundreds of containers provide supplies to the crusader forces through Pakistan, from Pakistan’s sea ports to the ring road in Peshawar, then onto the tribal regions and finally into Afghanistan. Pakistan’s supply line at one-thousand miles long represents the shortest and most cost effective land route for the Americans. These containers contain explosives, wine, eggs, building materials for fortifications and military transport vehicles. And this is asides from the oil tankers carrying fuel for the Western military transport, tanks and fighter planes.

So, whilst imposing taxes on oil to squeeze the Muslims, when it is available and not subject to shortages, the oppressor rulers ensure uninterrupted and cheap fuel for the crusaders. Whilst the people count their dead in bomb blasts and hide in fear in their homes, the oppressor rulers ensure explosives are available for American intelligence and private military organizations, explosives which find their way to the heavily infiltrated Taleban, to be used in evil bomb attacks to justify the operations. And whilst the hundreds of thousands of tribal Muslims live under the open skies or have houses collapsed on their heads by drone attacks, the rulers allow materials for the construction of fortresses masquerading as embassies and air bases from which America can launch drone attacks.

    O Muslims of Pakistan!

The oppressor rulers have abandoned you and your sons in the armed forces, for the sake of alliance with America, the confirmed enemy of Muslims, making false oaths to hide their treachery, persecuting Muslims who raise a voice against the Americans and all for the sake of pleasing their colonialist masters and amassing huge personal wealth. They are not from you and you are not from them. Allah سبحانه وتعالى said,

“Have you not seen those who take as allies a people upon whom is the wrath of Allah They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to a lie while they know. Allah has prepared for them a severe torment. Evil indeed is that which they used to do. They have made their oaths a screen. Thus they hinder (others) from the path of Allah, so they shall have a humiliating torment. Their children and their wealth will avail them nothing against Allah. They will be the dwellers of the Fire to dwell therein forever.” [Surah al-Mujadilah 58:14-17]

    O Muslims of Pakistan!

It is upon you and the sincere and brave amongst the officers in Pakistan’s armed forces to end the rule of the oppressors and their treachery. You must mobilize as a movement to cut the lifeline of the crusaders, which gives life to their war against the Muslims of Pakistan and Afghanistan. You must call your sons, fathers and uncles within the armed forces to end the co-operation in sin and transgression and establish relations with America on a war footing. Allah سبحانه وتعالى warned the Muslims,

    تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلاَ تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ

“Help each other in Good and Taqwa, but do not help one another in sin and transgression.”

    [Surah al-Maa’ida 5:2]

Exhaust all your means and Allah سبحانه وتعالى will assist you, whether it is the peaceful blockade of the transport routes, delegations to the transporters or calling your relatives in the armed forces to cut the crusader lifeline. Cut the supply lines and this bold step will encourage other nations, tired of American tyranny, to do the same. Call for the tribal Muslims and the armed forces to join hands against the American enemies, exposing the agents within them and building the brotherhood of the sincere upon which the blessings of Allah سبحانه وتعالى and His sweet promise of victory will descend. Build an environment within Pakistan such that even the corrupt will feel shame to sit in the same room with the American politicians and military officials, let alone smile and beam with pride. Let this be a Muslim land that none of the open enemy can enter, except to negotiate surrender, whether Holbrooke, or Petraeus, or Hillary Clinton or even Obama himself! Uproot the evil rulers and establish the Khilafah in their place. And a world, from South America to Africa to Japan, which is tired of the criminal American intelligence and military, will breathe a sigh of relief, preparing the ground for your rightful leadership over humankind as the Islamic Khilafah state.

    لِيُحِقَّ الْحَقَّ وَيُبْطِلَ الْبَـطِلَ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُجْرِمُونَ

“That He might cause the truth to triumph and bring falsehood to nothing, even though the criminals hate it.” [Surah al-Anfal 8:8]

    Al-Nawawi said in al-Majmoo’:

With regard to selling weapons to ahl al-harb (those who wage war against the Muslims), it is haraam according to scholarly consensus.

    Ibn al-Qayyim said in I’laam al-Muwaqqi’een:

Imam Ahmad said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade selling weapons at times of fitnah (tribulation)… It is obvious that selling them is helping others in sin and transgression. This also applies to every sale, rental or exchange that helps people to disobey Allaah, such as selling weapons to kaafirs, aggressors and bandits… or renting one’s house to someone who will set up a place for sin in it, or selling candles to someone who will use them to disobey Allaah, and other actions which help people to do that which Allaah hates and is angry with.

    End quote.

    In al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (25/153) it says:

It is haraam to sell weapons to ahl al-harb (those who are waging war against Islam) or to those who are known as bandits who attack Muslims or who stir up fitnah among them. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: It is not permissible for a Muslim to take weapons or horses to the enemies of the Muslims which will strengthen them against the Muslims, or anything that will help them to acquire weapons and horses, because selling weapons to ahl al-harb strengthens them to fight the Muslims and motivates them to declare war and continue fighting.

This issue is not the matter of ordinary or minor sins, rather it is a matter that has to do with the basis of ‘aqeedah (belief) and Tawheed (belief in the Oneness of Allaah), and the Muslim’s support and loyalty towards the Religion of Allaah and his disavowal of the enemies of Allaah. This is what was stated by the imams in their books.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his Fataawa (1/274):

The scholars of Islam are unanimously agreed that whoever supports the kaafirs against the Muslims and helps them in any way is a kaafir like them as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Awliyaa’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Awliyaa’ of each other. And if any amongst you takes them (as Awliyaa’), then surely, he is one of them. Verily, Allaah guides not those people who are the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers and unjust)”

    [al-Maa'idah 5:51].

See how this slave is "promising" reopening of the route.

He will never talk about the mass murder by drones.

28 Nato oil tankers set ablaze in Islamabad

Unidentified gunmen killed at least six people and set 28 Nato oil tankers on fire carrying fuel for Nato and US forces in Afghanistan in Islamabad on Monday.

Many tankers caught fire during the attack. Rescue sources said at least six people died. The sources added that six others were injured in the attack.

A vital land route for Nato supplies for Afghanistan that has been blocked for three days will reopen "relatively quickly," Pakistan's ambassador to Washington told a US news channel on Sunday.

Pakistan halted the Nato convoys on Thursday after Nato helicopters killed three Pakistani soldiers.

"I think the supply line will be open relatively quickly," he said, adding that he expected it would take "less than a week."

"It's not a blockade. It's just a temporary suspension of the convoys moving through," Haqqani added.

Utter hypocrisy of army establishment and agencies. On one hand they are making money from supply lines and with other hand they are attacking these same supply lines when they need to squeeze more money from US.

Pakistani military establishment has to decide sooner or later if they are with their children the Taliban or with their masters, the US. This hypocrisy, lies, double game, treachery, back stabbing cannot continue for long. Either declare jihad against US or arrest Mullah Omar from his ISI safe house.

In all media reports the blockage of supply line passing through Tourkham , Khyber agency is mentioned, But there are also other supply lines passing through Chaman , Balochistan. In media i didnt see any report about it if it is also blocked. May be the blockage news is only to address Pakistani people and local emdia and may not be affecting NATO if other supply lines are open.

Indeed media is complicit in this. They are spinning it for the govt/army who are trying to satisfy both the locals and the yanks. No question the supply lines are open but they are trying to create the impression they govt/army eunuchs have some balls.
