Were the leaders of the Pakistan Movement (1940-1947)more concerned with establishing a Muslim Majority state within the Indian sub-continent OR with establishing an Islamic State?

  2. Im more concerned on how, when and who will become a reason to save Pakistan from existing danger and destruction....

Pakistan is a reality now whether "anyone" was in favor of it as an Islamic/UnIslamic state or against it so shouldnt we be more worrying about it?

Islamic State but that should not be interpreted as a Theocratic State.

Islamic state. In present day Pakistan, we need to understand this now more than ever, only Islam can be a binding force for all in Pakistan. Islam k naam per bana tha, issi k asoolon per chal ker hee qaim rahayga. Hope we understand this before its too late.

Islamic Nation? Their is no such thing.

We are Sunni, Shia, Wahabi, Deobandi, Baralvi, Salfi, Aghakhani, Bohri, Zaidia and what not? So which Islamic state you are referring gv?

In current day Pakistan, religion is more of a dividing force.

It was simply demanded a state for the areas where Muslims are in majority.
    Nothing more or less.

In my opinion its was both.... for people living in muslim minority area idea was presented as Pakistan, "Islamic state for for all muslims".

For muslims living in majority areas idea was presented as "State for muslim majority".

    I came to this opinion
1: by looking at following link and Iqbal's Allahbad speech

2: Number of people migrated from Hindu/sikh majority area to Pakistan leaving behind their own land

3: Liberal life style of muslim leadership during Pakistan movement.

This idea of Islamic state for All muslims was from Ch. Ellahi while Iqbal's idea of Pakistan was little different.
later onl Ch. Elahi was announced Persona non grata with his ideas.

    Iqbal's clarification about his Address

Following is the letter, Allama Iqbal wrote to Prof. Edward John Thompson of Oxford University.

    Dr. Sir Mohd Iqbal, M.A., Ph.D. Barrister-at-Law

    Lahore 4 March 1934

    My Dear Mr. Thompson,

I have just received your review of my book. It is excellent and I am grateful to you for the very kind things you have said of me. But you have made one mistake which I hasten to point as I consider it rather serious. You call me a protagonist of the scheme called “Pakistan”. Now Pakistan is not my scheme. The one that I suggested in my address is the creation of a Muslim Province – i.e.; a province having an overwhelming population of Muslims in the North-West of India. This new province will be, according to my scheme, a part of the proposed Indian Federation. Pakistan scheme proposes a separate federation of Muslim Provinces directly related to England as a separate dominion. This scheme originated in Cambridge. The authors of this scheme believe that we Muslim Round Tablers have sacrificed the Muslim nation on the altar of Hindu or the so called Indian Nationalism.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Mohammed Iqbal

as per Rizvan sahib's post above it was Chaudhry Rehmat Ali not Chaudhry 'Elahi' who coined Pakistan as a concept but thank you for elucidating Iqbal sahib's point of view as concurrent with the rest of the aiml.

    @ak

    thank you! my point precisely
