A flight of Air Blue carrying 153 passengers crashed in Margalla hills in Islamabad.
Some CDA workers reached there but helpless because they have no tools with them to do anything. No report of any survival yet.

Passenger plane crashes outside Islamabad
A passenger plane carrying an estimated 152 people has crashed in the hills outside the Pakistan capital of Islamabad. The number of casualties from the crash was not clear but witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the area of the crash.
One body had been recovered, an official said.
Pakistani news channels showed what appeared to be wreckage of the plane as a helicopter hovered above the heavily forested hills to assess the situation. Fire was visible on the ground.
"There were 146 passengers and six crewmen on board. We are gathering information. We have no more details," Mubarik Shah, spokesman of the state-run Civil Aviation Authority, said.
The aircraft was reported to be en route to Islamabad from Karachi when it went down. Officials said the cause of the crash was not clear.
The plane belonging to AirBlue, a private airliner, lost contact with the control room of the Islamabad International Airport at 0443 GMT.
The accident took place the Margalla Hills on a rainy, cloudy morning in Islamabad. Emergency crews were en route to the site of the crash, but progress was slow because access was difficult.
"We have reports that the plane fell into the Margalla Hills. There is smoke, but we have not been able to reach there. It is surrounded by the hills and there is no road access," police official Sayed Subhan.
Officials initially thought that the crash involved a small plane. But police official Mohammed Saeed later said that "it seems that it is a bigger tragedy".
Residents in Islamabad said they had noticed a low flying plane pass over the city in the minutes before the crash.
"It was raining. I saw the plane flying very low from the window of my office," witness Khadim Hussain said.

Its pathetic that we are fighting a friggin` war on terror at such a high altitude where the terrain is even harsher and even then we don't have capability to do rescue missions at Margalla hills. Way these people are trying chances of pulling out survivors alive is diminishing as precious time is being lost. When ever such accidents happen then everything is in disarray and no leadership is visible,no one seems incharge.
Simply pathetic if they can't do a rescue operation in the center of the Capital.

@dOctOr
"and no leadership is visible,no one seems incharge."Don't worry; PM has issued orders to "investigate the crash" (without which people would have forgotten to do so) and the President has ordered to "speed up the rescue" (without which the rescuers would have intentionally kept the pace slow)...
"Simply pathetic if they can't do a rescue operation in the center of the Capital. "
Don't worry -- milions will be allocated for "rescue equipment" for the next such incident but when it happens, you can be assured the scene will e very much the same (We saw that in action during the last two highrise fires)

I recall watching a doc where the airbus plane ran into the ground because the initial altitude setting set by the pilots was incorrect.

@nota and doctor
Stop cheap point scoring game and let the rescue teams do their work. You guys do not even know ABC of rescue efforts and aimlessly criticizing Govt, President and linking with our fight against taliban terrorists in FATA. This is a major disaster and usually no one is prepared for such accidents. Hilly terrain around accident scene is also difficult and there is heavy rain in the area which may hamper rescue efforts.
Keep your anger and venom for some other time and let rescue teams do their work. As a united nation, we should demonstrate national unity at the time of such national disaster.

I just got off the phone from my brother-in-law. He was on the PIA flight next to this unfortunate Air Blue flight and saw this plane going down in flames through the cockpit. He said it seemed like Pilot's fault. He was told like all the rest to hover around in the air as conditions are not safe to land. Somehow while handing around in the air he brought the plane at very low altitude. The impact badly jolted their flight and confidence.
These sort of incidents reminds us of uncertainty of life. May God rest souls of deceased in peace and give patience to friends and relatives to bear the loss. Amin.

He said it seemed like Pilot's fault. He was told like all the rest to hover around in the air as conditions are not safe to land. Somehow while handing around in the air he brought the plane at very low altitude. The impact badly jolted their flightMy younger bro is a pilot and according to him Airbus A321 is a relatively newer generation of aircraft with latest modern systems like fly-by-wire (FBW), Ground proximity warning system (GPWS) (in which aircraft intelligently detects proximity to the ground and computer voice warns and alerts pilot to take corrective measures in case of any deviation ) . So if this plane had drifted away into no flyzone and was flying at really low altitude like all eye witness accounts suggest then keeping in mind the pilot's experience it could be predicted that it were the instruments that failed which led to this crash.
Another thing worth mentioning here is that from the side this plane was approaching runway didn't have instrument landing system (ILS) installed. This system helps aircraft land in bad weather and avoid this type of accidents. Why didn't they installed this system to cover all runways of Islamabad airport, well only CAA can answer that one.
One theory is that pilot was overworked and didn't had number of hours gap between his last flight that was mandatory according to rules,so according to this theory it must have been pilot error which led to this disaster,co pilot too was relatively new and might have shied away and must not have pointed out any apparent mistakes that might have been committed by senior pilot.

Prime Minister indeed went up in the air along with helicopter full of joyriders including chief ministers of all provinces, information minister and Rehman Malik. I am not sure what he achieved from this trip other then hindering movements of rescue helicopters because of VVIP flight. These VVIP leader should better stay in their bunkers in case of any disaster and avoid visiting hospitals with flowers as their visits only make lives of those affected and the other patients miserable, instead maybe they should send their 'drivers' to deliver flowers etc.

Your comments are inept and uncalled-for. Prime Minister went to oversee situation and calling his trip a joyride is simply ridiculous. Rescue authorities know better than you and I what they have to do and they do not need dictation and instruction from you.
Vent your anger and venom for some other time and let authorities do their work. This is a terrible tragedy and my thoughts are with the families of the victims

"Vent your anger and venom for some other time and let authorities do their work. "I think what dOctOr said is very appropriate:

The people on the Air Blue flight are DEAD.
They cannot be helped in any way.Now everyone must look at and try to find out what really happened which led to this air plane crash.
Here is my critique of the incident-
A known diabetic 65 years old retired pilot was flying this airplane after having flown another airplane from Turkey-( supposedly 9 hours) in bad weather in a very risky area.
Why no one wants to address THAT.
Diabetic need their suger level maintained.
They need to take their Insulin on time.
They need to take their food on time.
They need to take their fluids on time.Older people need a good UNDISTURBED 8 hours sleep.
If that does not happen- their reflexes and their barins DO NOT fucntion well and they are likely to make mistakes which involve instant memory, reactions and quick decision making in stressful conditions.
Now nota and doctor did not put THAT pilot in the seat to fly that plane.
The people whose incompetence is everywhere - we need to discuss this rather than going and sitting in a corner- sulking about this tragedy which it is but due to WHAT?
Posted 1 year ago on 29 Jul 2010 14:33 # -
@shimatoree: You raised some very good points. This was a fiasco all around. From the overworked, pious pilot -- who flew from Turkey (Italy?) for 8 hours, stayed up all night for Ibadat (nothing wrong with it), and then was asked to take this flight to ISB -- to onlookers stealing valuables from the dead passengers' luggage to the police and military standing by to the reporters shrieking in the faces of those who had lost loved ones just to get "the news first'
Everytime something like this happens, I have to ask myself:
What.The.Hell.Is.Wrong.With.Us?
Re: the pilot, I think pilots at that age are capable of flying (if in good shape and disciplined as you said,) but an sleep deprived, tired, overworked, diabetic 60+ year old flying into foggy and rainy conditions was a recipe for disaster.
I wonder what the co-pilot was doing at this time. I have a feeling they forgot they had to take one more left turn and kept going through landing procedures as if they were lined up for the strip already.

Margalla tragedy: Downpour, avalanches delay probe
Heavy downpour and avalanches added to the delay in probe and relief efforts at the Margalla plane crash site, Dunya TV investigation team reported on Thursday.
Dunya TV investigation team reached the site and said the rescue efforts have been delayed due to heavy rains as the debris of the plane is still to be removed. The anti-terror squad completed collection of human limbs and charred flesh.
Meanwhile, at least 46 bodies of plane crash victims have been identified and handed the same over to their heirs while many charred bodies are still kept at PIMS Hospital whose identification will be determined through DNA tests.
Wrong radar signal caused crash: EX-GM CAA
Talking to Dunya News, former GM Air Traffic Control Hafiz Zakhawatul Hassan has termed wrong radar signals that caused the plane crash. He said that the Civil Aviation Authority's radar gave out a wrong signal.DNA tests would be completed till tomorrow: Rehman
Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik has assured that all the DNA tests would be completed till tomorrow. He added that the all the dead bodies would be sent to their homes on government’s expenditures.

@Sweettruth
- Indeed PM went up in the air for a joy ride,if it wasn't a joy ride then what else was it? What good did it achieved, instead it would have been a lot better that he would have instead asked his helicopter to be used for rescue efforts and to shift bodies from ground zero, i am sure you must have noticed Rehman Malik squeezed in between all the joy rider(just like a child who is insistent to get in the car even when there is no room left so he squeezes in between) I am sure he must have came running upon hearing that PM is taking the whole platoon up in the air to wave to all those dead who went down with the plane. (If PM just wanted an aerial view he could have easily sent in a live tv camera on board a rescue heli and seen live footage at PM house).
- From the moment the plane went down, there was no responsible or competent person managing the situation from government side,as usual government's tarzan Rehman malik and Baber Awan were first ones to talk to media, both these irresponsible jerks love talking nonsense to media. Rehman Malik said that 5 people have been pulled alive from the wreckage, while Baber Awan said 7 people are still alive. Both these jerks simply don't realize how much confusion this irresponsible and unverified statement basically created, relatives of victims started lining up at Karachi and Islamabad airport and were in agony, hoping that their loved ones were among those 5-7 lucky people whom Rehman Malik was talking about. They demanded airline and CAA to
tell them where those 7 injured had been shifted, obviously airline was clueless, victims relatives went from pillar to post from one hospitals to another and 1122 offices hoping that they might see some miracle of their loved ones surviving, for them there was glimmer of hope, but actual rescue workers including NDMA(National Disaster Management Authority) were quite perplexed and they said they haven't pulled out any one alive and maybe Rehman Malik himself can comment on his statement about the whereabouts of those injured victims that were supposedly pulled out alive. Indeed late in the afternoon after causing considerable agony and torture to the families, Rehman Malik as usual casually backtracked from his earlier statement and said that all on board had perished and none was pulled alive.- During the day Information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said that due to PM's directive to speed up and expedite the inquiry into this crash black box have been recovered and soon formal professional investigation will start, later in the day he too had to backtrack from his earlier statement and IG islamabad said that we had found some cylinder which we thought was the blackbox.
- Late at night Rehman Malik showed up at the hospital where families (many of whom had came all the way from Karachi after the whole agonizing day) had been waiting to receive or see the bodies, obviously many of them had been burnt beyond recognition so DNA samples were needed, instead of expediting the work and getting things done, families who were already patiently enduring pain were left unattended and neglected which not surprisingly resulted in many of them loosing temper(which was quite natural considering what they were going through),Now guess what Rehman Malik said after showing up,he said that my security walas are saying that crowd has become too rowdy and aggressive so you shouldn't be here and despite that i am here, all of you should make a line and we will make sure all dna sampling is done right now. He said all that on a megaphone while security walas held back the relatives,He further attempted to shower his kindness on the grieving families by saying that despite my security walas reluctance,if you all want then i can come out and sit with you all.. (I am simply sickened and at loss of words to comment on this one,i would just say incompetent and irresponsible jerk can't even understand the emotions and feelings of the families and is disrespectful and rubbing salt on their wounds by talking about his friggin` security )
- The rescue effort to wasn't really well cordinated, after trekking 2 hours on foot hundreds of people had shown up on the crash site, most of them were mere spectators, many of them were scavenger and burglars who had shown up with ill intentions even at the time of such horrible and painful accident. Police found a man carrying a large sack,During search a human hand with gold rings and bangles was recovered from him. several other people were intercepted with mobiles and gold ornaments.
- Today some of the victims bodies were dispatched from Islamabad to Karachi, many famlies had privately arranged with Edhi and Chipa ambulances to shift the bodies from airport, when the bodies arrived the families received them after verification and identification and shifted them to waiting Edhi and Chipa ambulances which they had already arranged, when everything was set and they were ready to leave, things took an ugly turn when bodies were literally 'snatched' from their families and pulled out from those private ambulances and transferred to waiting city government ambulances as was ordered by Altaf bai and co.
Its quite Natural and obvious that famlies must have been hoping to privately mourn the tragedy away from limelight without involving any politics or political party, but sadly the photo op brigade didn't spared them.

Ghost of TK..
The co-pilot was on his 2nd ever flight so he was not that experienced and he wouldn't have guts to stand against his superior decision (first being inexperienced and 2ndly because he was himself too junior)
All around the world, the Pilots retired at the age of 60 but then these "retired" Pilots are re-hired by the budget/low cost airlines though these Pilots go through medical check ups. But the Doctor's working for CAA can issue a clean cheque of bill if you have "Appropriate" links and most of the Pilots know this.In my opinion, it was a human error which was potentiated by, lack of rest, diabetic Pilot (Pilots do hide their ailments and prefer to go to private hospitals in order to keep their health records clean) and an inexperienced first officer (they are usually capable of landing an airplane) along with bad weather.
Apart from the tragic accident, we need to build our rescue system as NO ONE in Pakistani emergency/Ambulance services are trained to carry out rescue in the event of any natural or unnatural disaster)

The distance to margalla hills after you take a left turn is about 12km. The landing speed of an airbus a321 with flaps extended is around 140knots (259kph). If they kept going straight towards the point of impact after turning left over the runway-30 side, it would take them less than 3 (2:46) minutes to reach margalla hills.
If the pilot was fatigued and didn't pay attention to aligning the plane even for 40 seconds, and the co-pilot was busy reading the checklist, it could be that they just didn't have enough time to react.
It seems from eyewitness account that the plane was in landing configuration and even though they were told to go around to runway-12, they turned on 30 but then just kept going as if they had lined up already and when the clouds parted, they were too close to the hills.
My theory is they forgot they had to take another turn and had to line the plane up again. They kept going as if they were landing (the original configuration for the 30 side)

All around the world, the Pilots retired at the age of 60Well this was wrongly reported in section of media that co pilot was on his 2nd flight,in fact it was his 2nd flight with THIS pilot on this route, whereas co pilot had 1700 hours under his belt as commercial pilot and on this specific A321 plane he had 300+ hours experience, furthermore he was ex Pakistan Airforce fighter pilot(had been flying F16s for PAF) .
As things stand at the moment, retirement age of commercial pilots worldwide is 65 and the pilot of this flight 202 was 62 years old(not 65 as was being reported)

it seems like it would remain a mystery , as many other mysteries of the country .
Air Blue has been owned by Alfalah group of UAE .
and Zardari sahib has been a supporter of them .
plus Nawaz and company has their shares with Air Blue .
so no party would want this to get it revealed .Posted 1 year ago on 02 Aug 2010 6:28 #
