PM's remarks on restructuring Hyderabad upset MQM
    Dawn Report
    Sunday, 09 May, 2010

KARACHI: The prime minister said on Saturday that the old administrative structure of Hyderabad would be restored, describing the division of the former district as a great disservice to the region.

Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s statement, at a meeting of legislators and office-bearers of the People’s Party from Hyderabad division, drew an immediate riposte from Altaf Hussain.

The Muttahida chief came out with a warning that his party would consider quitting the ruling coalition if moves were initiated to reverse Hyderabad’s bifurcation.

Sources in the PPP, however, quoted the prime minister as saying that the government would consult its allies before taking any decision on the matter.

As soon as the PM’s statement was flashed on television channels, Sindh Governor Ishratul Ibad Khan, who is currently in London, telephoned both the premier and the president, conveying to them the MQM’s reservations.

Sources said that the meeting of the MQM coordination committee, which was simultaneously held in Karachi and London, resolved to go to any extent to “resist moves” to change the administrative set-up of Hyderabad.

“We have plainly told the PPP high-ups that our alliance will end the day they impose this unjust decision,” said a member of the MQM coordination committee.

Although there was no mention of the party’s future line of action in a statement issued after the meeting on Saturday, the sources said that majority of the participants were of the view that the Muttahida should quit the coalition if the government took a unilateral decision.

Altaf Hussain advised the PM not to take any major decision regarding Sindh without taking the MQM into confidence.

He saw some conspiracy behind “provocative statements” by some PPP leaders and observed that it was an attempt to end the PPP-MQM alliance.

Why Hyderabad can’t be a district like Karachi, asks Khuhro

KARACHI: Acting Sindh Governor Nisar Khuhro Sunday called for division of Karachi into five districts if Hyderabad’s current position was to be maintained.

Addressing a news conference at the PPP Media Cell here, he said that public opinion was not taken in the past on the division of Hyderabad and it was done only to gain political mileage.

“If the city of Karachi having population of more than 15 million can be made one district than why Hyderabad can’t become a single district?” he questioned.

About Prime Minister’s remarks about restoration of Hyderabad to its old position, he said that no notification was issued in this regard. Therefore, there was no need to show such reaction.

The acting governor said that PPP’s Core Committee was consistently trying to evolve a consensus on this issue and hoped that a joint agreement would be reached soon in this connection.

“Altaf Hussain believes in serious politics, he said, adding that the MQM chief will find out a solution by sitting together,” he added.

Is PPP ready to cut altaf down to size.
This is an unnatural alliance as i said earlier.
If altaf withdraws support to PPP then they will lose majority and we might have midterm elections.

This is all a political gimmick. Do y'all think that an idiot like Yusuf Raza Gilani has any intellect to stir up something like this and have a meaningful debate on this matter?

  13. Looks like Gilani has not met with Sindhis in the outskirts of Hyderabad. The PPP Sindh and CM Sindh would be debating whether Gilani is simply a dumbfold to shoot in his own feet or a backstabber who was trying to portray himself a visionary. God help Pakistan premier with some brains.

This govt needs first 5 years to undo, in the next 5 they will think of do'ing.

Congratulations to MQM for having enough wisdom and political sense to know how to use media and other means to raise its concerns and alleviate its concerns. Congratulations to MQM for knowing how to cleverly play chess in this game of politics at a grand scale.

PPP is trying to steal Hydreabad from MQM by playing cheap games.

Just like they installed their Admin in Karachi inplace of MK.

Altaf Bhai, do what you gotta do, most of Karachi and Hyd is with you, fully with you!

  20. The Sindhis I'm afraid in the adjoining districts of Matiari, Tando Allahyar and Tando Muhammad Khan who had gotten the benefit and budget would suffer which Gilani had not realized.

    @LiberalKarachi,

    mere bhai,

most of the people here on these forums dont give care one pennyworth about Karachi, about Hyderabad and its future. they dont care about the biggest revenue generating engine of Pakistan.

they are fine with PPP waderas taking up our city hostage, But wallaahi, we will not give up.

MQM will not let it happen, we will not let undo MK bhai's work and let it go to waste. no matter how much ungrateful MQM bashers can blabber.

call MQM watever the hell but they will always remain better than a drunk admin who was caught a few days ago in Mubashir Luqman show. He couldnt even walk straight!!!

    what is this ?
You are not the only representive of Karachi.
munafiqa aur nafrat kay Allmdar MQM's boys.

khaaaan hay meraa Qotaa system ,bihariii's in east pakistan.
IF MQM get out of Governament for Hydaerabad issue
where all those slogans for which they kill many name it in karachi's.

We all know why hyderabad and karachi is imprtant for MQM in present status.

let all parties do business in karaci we will see than.

    Posted 2 years ago on 12 May 2010 22:50 #
  23. You mean let PPP, PML-N, PML-Q, ANP, JI and PTI do business in Karachi? Well, aren't they there already? they just don't do good, that's all. You can't blame MQM's success for your failure, should you? Honestly, none of these parties, take on Mohajir issues, MQM doesn't either but at the end of the day MQM has the issue on it's to-do list. Surprisingly none of these parties would support in parliament the quota problem and behari issue you pointed out. So I take it you like Karachi and Hyderabad look like rest of Pakistan where two feudal parties reign.

MQM stance is based on double standards.Karachi which had population of 15 million, its 5 districts were merged into one district.
Hyderabad had only 2.7 million people, why was it divided into 4 districts.what was the logic?

    Posted 2 years ago on 13 May 2010 17:37 #
  26. This logic:
Sindh population 35 Million, 23 districts
Karachi population 18 Million, 1 district

That is Sindhis in rural Sindh want more districts or talukhas.
