But it might not be good news for 2 crore citezens of karachi because history shows that whenever MQM has quit the government the political motivated violence has escalated in urban areas of sindh.

  5. Yes it is the news cause operation against them would become a possibility and we know that our so called Badmash home minister of Sindh so bad time for MQm in the future but in past it has been proved that MQM able to gain their absolute support in the bad times as when MQm joined Nawaz league in 1991 they were going through bad period as they were losing support but when operation started their support suddenly return back....

Hypocrites from MQM are so greedy and selfish that even if PPP humiliates them, even they won't quit govt, Their lust to remain in power have reached such level that only a full fledged operation would make them part ways, otherwise anything short of that and they would continue to keep on licking current govt's feet like they have been continuously doing for past one decade.

As this article clearly points out that ever since Nawaz's quiting govt,MQM have realized that without them govt would collapse so they're blackmailing the govt and wrecking and tearing apart karachi with complete impunity.Only a stern from Army chief might make them mend their ways(Though highly unlikely in my personal view).

Coming full circle: violence in Karachi

    By Cyril Almeida
    Wednesday, 25 Aug, 2010

KARACHI: The spate of ‘target killings’ in the city is a political problem that shows every sign of worsening in the weeks and months ahead. In the first two weeks of August alone, over 140 people were killed in ****-for-tat violence following the killing of an MQM MPA and an ANP politician.

.. Privately, much of the present violence is blamed on the MQM.

A senior security official said, “We’ve got 14 or 15 boys in custody, each responsible for 17, 18 deaths. The interrogation reports detail everything, the sectors, the places they met, the motorcycles and weapons used, everything.”

Analysts suggest that Pakhtun migration to Karachi following military operations in Fata and the northern Pakistan has raised the hackles of the MQM — the party allegedly fears that the IDPs may be absorbed by the Pakhtun population of Karachi, never to return.

“Look at the people who are being killed: rickshaw drivers, pushcart owners, labourers, carpet and hardware shop owners, shoe polishers,” a veteran Karachi journalist said.

“That’s exactly the kind of jobs you’d expect Pakhtuns coming to the city to take up. The message is clear: if we can’t stop you from coming here, at least we can slow the tide.”

..Then there are the killings of a sectarian nature that appear to have become linked with a bitter war being fought between the Muttahida (the MQM proper) and the Haqiqi (a splinter faction).

The picture here is even murkier. According to analysts and security officials, militant wings of Shia groups began to target SSP and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi leaders in 2009, presumably as revenge for the killings of Shias.

CCPO Waseem Ahmed suggests that, long term, only two things could reduce ethnic and political violence in the city: “First, deweaponisation. Everyone blames the police, but go ask the political parties why they never talk about deweaponisation.” In addition, Mr Ahmed said that the criminal-justice system needs to be overhauled. “A terrorist is like a car-lifter now, he gets caught, then he’s back on the streets in a couple of years, then he does it again, gets caught again, it’s a joke.”

A Sindh government official said, “After Mian sahib (Nawaz Sharif) quit the coalition, the MQM got a free hand. They know they are key now (to the coalition government in Islamabad), so they are demanding their pound of flesh. But their demands keep going up.”

A senior security official suggested: “The answer doesn’t lie in Karachi, it’s in Islamabad. Bring all the leaders in a room and have the army chief there to guarantee the peace. He needs to say, ‘Cut it out or we will smash you like we did before.’ They’ll quickly fall into line then.”

If this happen, MQM will gain support again by cashing the victim mentality. On the other hand MQM is like the rats of the ship, if they are jumping out, mean ship is going to sink soon.

MQM will never quit government even if they will be forced by PPP because they want power in Karachi. If any force make MQM to move out then get ready!! Riots and killing will be begin in Karachi by MQM.

why should mqm drop out of govt?????
it has the mandate of urban pakistan, 15% of the total population! how fair is it to remove it from the govt?

mqm will never be able to form its govt alone otherwise because the rest of the parliament is full of feudal landlords who will never do anything for land reforms and education...

i personally dont like THIS 'so-called democracy'
LG was true democracy which these feudals abolished..

had they let the LG system survive, the destruction by the flood would have been not as much as it is now

this is the dilemma of democracy in societies where common people are helpless, illiterate and are slave to feudals...

    This sounds BS.
Never gonna happen. (at least thats what I think)

This news is no different than zulifqar mirza saying he will hang all the terrorists in Sindh, esp in Karachi.

PPP thinks MQM support no longer matters in NA

ISLAMABAD: The latest parliamentary numbers, in the wake of Altaf Hussain’s statement, clearly show that the PPP could stay in power without MQM support, both at the Centre and in Sindh.

“The PPP-led alliance does not need MQM in Sindh and just a few members’ support is required to maintain majority in the National Assembly for survival at the centre,” the parliamentary affairs sources told The News while referring to the current party position and prevailing political scenario.

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah-led government in Sindh is totally out of danger as the PPP could continue to rule without support from any of its allies. “In the National Assembly, it needs the backing of just two more members to meet the constitutional requirement of 172 votes to keep a grip on the government.”

There is a beeline of MNAs from PML-Q to help out the government while other coalition partners such as Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam (F), Awami National Party (ANP) and independent MNAs stay with the PPP. The parliamentary affairs sources believe that the MQM Chief Altaf Hussain’s widely opposed statement inviting generals into political matters in the name of accountability has prompted the PPP central command to think about alternatives to avoid any abrupt inconvenience at the centre.

They also believe that the PPP-MQM relations would be subjected to the most strenuous test when the PML-N’s privilege motions (against Muttahida) would be brought before the National Assembly for discussion in its upcoming requisitioned session scheduled to start by September 2.
“In the presence of PML-Q forward bloc constituting a total of around 30 members and its individuals tilting towards the treasury benches, the PPP may find the situation easier to handle instead of inviting PML-N, which can refuse to become part of an alliance with the PPP,” they added.

The figures available from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the National Assembly Secretariat depict a favourable situation for the PPP although the smaller parties such as JUI-F, ANP and Fata members could exploit the new political alignment for their own political gains.
In the National Assembly, the PPP’s strength is 126, just 46 short of required vote of 172 members to retain its government led by Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gillani. Its coalition partners account for 42 seats, ANP (13), JUI-F (7), PML-Functional (5) and 17 independents.

All these parties and the two single-member parliamentary parties make up a grand total of 170 - just 2 short of the required strength to run the government.

The political pundits say MQM’s 25 NA seats do not matter and its leadership is not in a position to exploit the situation when almost all the parliamentary parties have opposed Altaf Hussain’s statement.

On the other hand, the PML-N enjoys the status of the second largest parliamentary party with its 90 MNAs. Likewise, the PML-Q’s official strength is 53 with its members split in groups including the forward bloc. PPP-Sherpao having one member is already sitting on the opposition benches.

In Sindh, PPP has 93 members, MQM 51, PML-functional 8, NPP 3, PML-Q 11, and ANP 2. It shows that the PPP with 93 members is comfortably placed to run the government without support from any party including the MQM.

  14. I say its a better way for MQM to get rid of this COLLISION thing and come to opposition cause in this way they will GAIN MUCH BIGGER SUPPORT of people and OPPOSITION IS ALSO REQUIRED TO BE CLEAN cause Nawaz League is playing Friendly opposition in the Parliament so in this way teh REAL FACE of Nawaz League will be exposed as well...Further more benefits would come in the form of Media favoring MQM which is very vital for them to make their mark in Punjab and Media would also COVER them if any chance of operation against them is planned by Govt. so all the way MQM has MORE benefits in sitting in opposition as compare to sitting in Govt.
