  1. CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF PRESS FREEDOM IN PAKISTAN

    By Syed Abdul Siraj (PhD)

    ABSTRACT

Press freedom has never been consistent in Pakistan . Different regimes used legal and constitutional means to control the press from public debate and criticism. In it sixty years of history, Pakistan has been ruled by military more than the civilian. Press in Pakistan usually faces threats, violence, economic pressure, etc. The country's law on blasphemy has been used against journalists. Poor literacy, urban orientation of the press, and the high price of newspapers are detrimental factors for the under development of print media in Pakistan . Beside these barricades, one can now easily notice a shift from the centralized broadcasting to an open competition broadcast system in Pakistan , enabling the audience to enjoy more power of selective exposure. All governments including the military say high about the press freedom but often thing the other way round when the press criticizes the government. However, during the Musharraf military and civil regime for about nine year, press was operated in a mixed character. In view of this situation, Pakistan 's place in the Reporters sans Frontiers - Annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index is 152 out of a total of 167 for the year 2007. However the new government of the Pakistan People's party has promised for maximum freedom of the press.

  2. I got the idea of creating this thread after seeing a cameraman of channel intruding the privacy of a institution. When I asked him that whether he had taken the permission he said no we dont need any permission.

Can these cameramen dare to enter in a powerful institution of the land like Police, Armed forces or courts etc??

Press freedom is being misused against our own national interests. Foreign elements are using our own media against our national interests.

Our instiutions ,except army :-) , are in their infancy , and with so many external parties influencing them , there is lot be desired in terms of responsible media reporting. Like justice , media cannot be blind, national intrest should be weighed in when reporting , cause ours is not a normal nation going through normal times....we are under severe and multiple threats

I remember about 2-3 months ago in punjab university girls hostel some terrorist sympathisers had put posters on wall calling for the killing of Qadyanis and used very inhuman language in those posters. Some girl made mistake to take one of the posters off from door of her room and the poor girl had to face the wrath of sectarian extremists.

Government should not only arrest the people who put those posters on but should also seal the press who printed those posters, but what can you do when your security establishment have outsourced the defence of Pakistan to the same terrorist who are busy these days organising rallies all over Pakistan in the name of "difa-e-Pakistan Council". What a shame!
