PS-94 By Polls – Violence in Karachi Following ANP’s Boycott

By-election on PS-94, vacant after assassination of MQM’s MPA Raza Haider, was re-scheduled after assassination of Dr. Imran Farooq and is holding on October 17, 2010. Initially the same by polls were scheduled for September 22, 2010.

The voting pattern & election results continuously proof it as a MQM stronghold, winning with great margin from 1988 till 2008, while the collective vote bank of all the opponents could not reach even to 10% of MQM’s vote in all previous elections.

Fearing defeat none of the parties had nominated its contestant for the same except ANP, which in the last elections could win only 959 votes.

In an announcement made today, ANP Sindh Leader Shahi Sed declared boycott for tomorrow’s polls, subsequently violence erupted in the city, especially in areas having some influence of ANP.

Knowing the fact that ANP cannot win this poll, questions are being raised what were the motives they nominate their candidate and now announced boycott?

ANP, with the help of a number of parties managed to win 2 PS seats in Karachi in General Elections 2008. It has 38 seats out of total 124 in Khyber Pakhtoonkhuwa Assembly. The Racist and Hateful speeches of ANP Sindh Leader Shahi Seid is on records agitating Pakhtoon Community against others, while it is also an established fact that ANP is not the Pakhtoon Representative Group as a large number of Pakhtoons are with MMA (JUI + JI) , PPPP, PPP(SP) and MQM.

Karachi, the business hub and the Economic Nerve Centre of Pakistan was termed as “Golden Egg” during British Rule, post independence migrants made it really a Golden Egg by the hardworking and skills. The small town of 1800 became the largest Industrial and Commercial City of the country, yielding almost 70% of the total GDP.

The recent spate of violence in Karachi may be seen as a toll to represent its POWER in PS-94 by ANP, but the long run agenda should not be neglected paved in the continues violence, land grabbing, extortion, strengthening smuggling routes from Afghanistan to the coast of Karachi.

why over 50 people got killed and hundreds injured with gunshot wounds?

    Posted 1 year ago on 17 Oct 2010 15:30 #
  3. Most incidents have reported in ANP dominated areas like Al Asif(near Nata Khan bridge), Safora Goth(near Super Highway where Dawn News van was Burned), Gulistan-e-Jauhar(Near Rabia City and Pahalwan Goth where car was burned), North Karachi(near Ayub Goth where Bus was burned) and in Orangi, Baldia and Banarus all those areas where Troubles were Started soon after ANP decided a Boycott the election yesterday evening and so far almost 30 people has been killed including one MQM worker.....

Today I think ANP has been EXPOSED badly as almost all incidents have happened in areas where they have influence and also they were exposed by VOTERS TURNOUT and SECURITY SITUATION in PS94 where only three incidents were reported during the whole Voting Session and all those incidents were those where MQM was the VICTIMS and according to counting so far almost 700000 Votes have been Casted so far in a BY ELECTION instead of GENERAL ELECTION where this numbers would have been BIGGER.....Another thing is that ANP also manage to get 284 Votes so far which indicate that even ANP supporters havent took that Boycott SERIOUSLY which is the PROVE that how much SUPPORT they have in Locality where people from All Communities that exist in Karachi reside in the Area.....Although out of 80+ Polling stations only Three Polling stations were seen EMPTY throughout the whole day......Looking at over all Situation it was ANP has made a JOKE out of themselves by first Participating the election and then 12 hours before Polling begins announce the Boycott by saying election should be POSTPONED again.....Now almost all their Dirty Tricks have FAILED here and moat people of that locality didnt took ANP seriously.....On the other hand in the most Parts of City the Markets that Usually Opens in Sunday were remain Opened in most parts of city(Many Markets are CLOSED in Sunday) but Traffic were usually Low because of Security Situation that was Created after ANP's decision to Boycott the elections(Five Cars were Burned yesterday).......

Due to security Situation MQM has also came up with Strong Response and currently a Meeting is under way within MQM to announce to either Departure or stay in the Govt. for the first time since MQM joined the collision another response also came from Governor Sindh who had always been involve in the Role of moderator between PPP and MQM for last two and the half years has finally decided to resign and he is on his way with his resignation to Islamabad according to Media.....Lets see what happens next but things have gone bad in Karachi and according to many ANP is responsible for all that......

whosoever knows mqm and its tactics, also knows k mqm khud maar k achi tarah rona bhi jaanti hai. shahi syed would b bad...mqm is even worse.

mqm has been fighting with all ethnicities. balkay it even fights with urdu speaking ppl of opposing parties. GA Altafism ne karachi ko siwaai barbaadi k kuch nahi diya.Becoz of Altaf Hussain's terror tactics a large number of educated urduspeakers have been forced to migrate abroad due to law n order situation. karachi widout mqm wud hav been a far more peaceful place. God save us from this mafia!

After reading your analyses, it shows that ANP is playing a very naegative role in Karachi to destabilize peace. I do not live in Karachi but as far as I know Karachi which has always been a commercial hub, an industrial centre, provides employment to millions of people and generates nearly 70% of national revenue with direct and indirect taxes; my question is why ANP want to destabilize peace in Karachi?

this many votes are not even casted in a national constituency, here we have MQM getting that many in provincial by-election when terrorism was on peak-

why no media, no politician presented these killings as terrorism?

watch blue blooded BalochisKarachites of Karachi vote for MQM with pride.

MQM is not an ethnic party.
GA MQM and congratulations for winning

Dr. Farooq Sattar delayed the celebrations of the candidates due to the deaths in Karachi and basically told candidates to return home safely and go nowhere else for safety reasons.

    @beenai,

they are visiting already and will start visiting more, it just happened so they are not superman to fly all over the city.

anyways, im not too happy over the deaths either, thats why MQM canceled the celebration totally and called it off and told winners to go back home. if you need proof here,

  20. its simple .
as every moment and every movement of a leader has been captured by the media .
and media is on our PCs and Lap tops too .
so we can see them visiting or not visiting .
its nothing to be make fool about .

as long as anti MQM feelings are concerned .
its not the matter of feelings .
    i am talking Facts .

  21. If someone knows anything about Orangi Town then he will acknowledge that its like Liyari for MQM and due to Raza Haider their is IMPOSSIBLE other Parties could be able to get more then 4-5000 Votes from this Constituency and the reason for this turnout was actually came in RESPONSE to ANP and People's Aman Committee's Joint Press Conference held a day before Yesterday for Boycotting the Election and also APPEALING people to stay at home otherwise MQM could have Won already but with 5-700000 Votes not with such Strength of 900000+ Votes because Residence of Orangi Town Wanted to Show everyone about their ISOLATION due to Firing from Kati Paharhi and Land Grabbing on areas where ANP is active....Their Whole Connection to other Parts of City is through a Road that was Built by Cutting the Mountain known as Kati Paharhi and whenever anything Wrong happens the Whole Area is Closed down due to Heavy Firing from Kati Paharhi on the top of the Mountain and not even an AMBULANCE can REACH Orangi in those situation.....They also knows the reason behind No reaction coming from MQM as MQM is trying to go Meanstream and they cant take them as ANP use anything happens their as PASHTUN CARD which gives a very Negative Publicity to MQM so that is why MQM is also trying Political way to resolve the Problem giving ANP an UPER HAND to DISTURB the Peace of that area by Firing from Kati Paharhi and Closing the Whole town and the POLITICAL WAY has WORKED for MQM because this way has been able to brought so many People by their Foot(Without any pressure) to VOTE MQM against ANP Mafia in Kati Paharhi.....Now even ANP cant make any Accusation of UNFAIR Election and and in the end they have to ACCEPT the Vote Bank as well as only 3 Incidents were Reported in whole area during Polling and in all those incident MQM were actually VICTIMS which is Proof of Fair Election and those who were Killed in Karachi after Announcement of Boycott were from outside of that Constituencies and it has also EXPOSED ANP+People's Aman Committee Involvement as the wave of Target Killing were also started after ANP announced BOYCOTT.....

This Elections have somewhat gave an INDICATION that next Election whenever held in Karachi the TURNOUT would be MAXIMUM compare to other Parts of Pakistan and People WILL show their Power by VOTE in next Elections whenever held in Karachi and it also shows that next would be the WORST NIGHTMARE for ANP and it will further Expose them as Shahi Syed has become more powerful then Asfandyar Wali in ANP SINDH(Not ANP KPK) and ANP has been trying to cover that up by continuously Quoting some Joint Intelligence PLEASURIZED REPORT to save themselves from Negative Publicity just like few days ago PPP were doing almost same for People's Aman Committee till ANP's Press conference with their Member.....

I hope Soon these AWARA Groups like ANP Sindh and People's Aman Committee using the name of Political parties will be EXPOSED and Karachi will be saved once again but till then their will be a Question Mark that who are SUPPORTING these Groups????The answer could be simple by looking at Past Experiences when many such types of Groups were Created in Karachi to destabilize the City and also the Party which has Most Vote Bank of Karachi in the Form of PPI(Punjabi Pakhtun Ittehad) and MQM Haqiqi whomever gave Birth to these Groups and Nurtured these Groups could be doing another Activities like that in the form of Shahi Syed and Head of People's Aman Committee by promoting Hatred against MQM in some Ethnic Community and then Present it in front of Pakistan as MQM is Criminal Stopping them from EXPANSION just like in 1992 when MQM a month away from MQM's Announcement to Officially Declare a National Party......

  23. so true ...
this article is portraying the real picture of Karachi ..
sorry state of affairs ...unfortunately .

if two or three people get killed .
now we say ; Ok nothing has happen ...
nothing to be worry about ...its normal .
though , murder of two three people is not at all normal .
but we are so use to it ....
to have became senseless somewhat .
    which is unfortunate indeed .

as long as by poll is concerned .
one seat is equals to 36 precious lives .
how many for the whole parliament ?
do any one have a calculator ???

whether we like it or not MQM has a strong support in Karachi,Hyderabad and Sukkur.....

I think rather than attempting to annihilate MQM it will be much better to encourage them to come into mainstream nationalistic politics....through the negotiations and subtle stimulation they could be convinced to disband its militant wing and desist from all sorts of other illegal and undemocratic activities.....

But first, before any such negotiation could take place, all other political parties should also come clean on aforementioned accounts.....

Watching our countrymen living happily with Indians and even Israelis and all the other nationalities abroad then why is it that we can't coexist with our own flesh & blood Mohajirs/Urdu speaking brothers & sisters??

Until and unless we move out of our little bias shells and learn to accommodate others, we can never become as one Pakistani nation......Alas that is only possible if our myopic leadership turns sincere and really wants to do something for Pakistan!!!

    Posted 1 year ago on 19 Oct 2010 6:17 #
  25. @Sultanalikhan ,
    first of all ...
we need to know ; what MQM has achieved so far in the past 25 years ?
if it had not achieved anything worth mentioning for the community ;it works for ...
then whats the guarantee it can provide to the other communities to vote them ???

here are some points , on which MQM use to play on its early days and got thousands of votes .
now have a quick and simple analysis .

is quota system has gone away ? NO
is feudalism has been thrown out of the system>? NO
is Urdu speaking community has got some extra mileages due since MQM has came into being? NO
is any legislation in the parliament has effected positively on the rights of the particular community ;MQM talks about ? NO

Then why a Sindhi , Punjabi , Balochi , Kashmiri or Pakhtun will vote for MQM ?
if its not been able to give anything to its own community .

question of one million dollar .
    without no answer ..........

@Beenai......you may have some truth to what you have said....but I was trying to paint on a bigger canvas that will make all of us a true Pakistani...

Believe me I am not a suppoter of MQM, in fact, I have many reservations about their doings....but then again we should not close our eyes from the realities in front of us....

My dear there are no guarantees in politics but a forward moving process that makes or breaks parties as they move along......democracy flourishes only if we show tolerance and are ready to listen to the other side and then adjust accordingly....

The questions that you have asked do hold water, but may I, most humbly, ask what about other political parties in Pakistan? Don't they all have one sort of or the other skeletons hidden in their closets? Some have more than the others...but all are dotted for sure...

That is why I was saying that SUBTLE NEGOTIATION should be arranged and serious issues worked out......all political parties should denounce extremist elements in their folds, dismantle weapon-toting brigades, and learn to respect other parties mandate, so on and so forth....

We have been up in arms against each others for all the wrong reasons, now it is about time that we got our acts together before it was too late, and then we sit licking our wounds wondering what had hit us......

    co-existing is the key!!!
