Public Representation

    Brother Harris asked a question in the thread of By-Election in NA-123 that what are the stats of NA-123 regarding total population, no. of registered votes, etc.

    This led me to open this thread that we normally pay attention to who has won the seat and what was his margin. But I think we don't pay attention that does the winner really represent the people of his respective constituency? For example in the most recent case of NA-123 the no. of registered voters exceed 200,000 but how many votes Parvez Malik could grab? I think around 45000. Hamid Miraj got 9945, Hafiz Sahib got 3000 around. So the total will reach approximately to 70000. Now if we talk of merit, does it show from any angle that Mr. Parvez Malik represent this constituency? Certainly NOT. But the fault lies also with the people living in NA-123. Why the people did not come to cast their votes? Why they don't realized that these elections are held in fact on their own expenses, from the tax money which they pay directly or indirectly.

    I must say that it should be a rule of law that if the no. of votes polled are less than 80% of the total no. of registered votes, the elections will be canceled. Re-Election cost should be taken from the people of that constituency. This process should be repeated until it meets the minimum limit of 80%. Anyhow the general public may report for anyone who did not poll his vote while he was registered. This will help to get the actual representation and we may see some positive improvements.

    Your view point is awaited.

  3. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

    Do we have a reference for these results ?

    - I wonder why 'RajputPuttar' forgot to do his calculations for the current by-polls, especially of NA-123 ?

    - Why he didn't ask the questions, he asked me about elections back in 2002 ?

    He professes to give us logical arguments. True accounts of elections.

    - According to PDF I have of national elections in 2002, 25% came out to vote

  9. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

    Around 80% didn't want to vote in by-polls.

    This trend of less and less people coming out to vote is a dangerous trend. It shows a general discontent, distrust in the whole excersize of elections by the majority of the masses.

    These are the serious concerns for all the Pakistanis including politicians.
    Election system in Pakistan is flawed and quite ineffective and that's the reason corrupts and incompetents get elected.We don't have to blame others,we rather have got to blame ourselves.As God doesn't help those who don't help themselves.
    We the common masses need to take things in hand otherwise Pakistan will keep going towards disastrous.

  11. Assalam-o-Alaikum-Warahmat-ULLAH ALL,

    @wantinsaf: I agree. We need to;

    (a) blame ourselves
    (b) find shortcomings, problems, things missing in ourselves
    (c) resolve those shortcomings, problems, missing things

    @HarisKhan

    I believe there are few things which we all need to put persistent efforts to get Pakistan we want.
    On political level,the struggle for changing system must go on by people like Imran.such politicians need to tell people where the problem lies and how we can make elections fruitful.Political analyst need to improve their analysis and come out of their room for coming across reality.Media should talk about issues in such a way which would lead to understand what impact it would lead on us in future.
    The problem I see lies with majority of us who are either ignorant or less concerned about our future.Everyone is supposed to play his role in his own capacity without looking for personal gains.

    Dawn writes down
    "Mai Jori Jamali, the first woman to contest an election for a general seat in the history of Jaffarabad district, could get only 491 votes. She was a candidate of the Awami Party Pakistan and supported by various NGOs."
    http://www.dawn.com/wps/wcm/connect/dawn-content-library/dawn/the-newspaper/front-page/19-ppp-grabs-balochistan-assembly-seat-130-hh-04
    In this election system poors can not compete against influential and landlaords.
    Mai Jori despite being very much like common masses could grab only 491 votes.There is something seriously wrong with this election system and we need to fix it
