I agree that a true religion should be tolerant. As it is people on the falsehood that try to force there thinking on others, where as people on the truth use arguements. Quran is full of examples of it.
Having said that, there are following intolerant interpretations of Islam that are wide spread. I would like to get this groups opinion on them.
1: Once a Muslim nation gets power, it would give three options to other govt., either accept Islam, or accept to give us Jizya and become under our govt., or be ready to fight. Is it really teaching of Islam?
2: As Muslims we have right to propogate our religion, but we'll create laws that to disallow non muslims to propogate their religion. Is it really teaching of Islam?
3: We'll convert others to be muslim, but if a muslim converts to another religion, we'll kill him. We discussed in the following blog that it is not the teaching of Islam.

4: Blasphemy against Islam is punishable to death but same is not true about blasphemy against others. Is it really teaching of Isalm?
5: Non Muslims will have to live as second class citizens in a Muslim society. Is it really teaching of Islam?
There are two faces of almost every religion, a very tolerant and a very hostile one. It is upto the believers to choose the one they prefer and the society will be reflected accordingly.
If you separate the verses revealed in Mecca and Madina, two different images of Islam will emerge. Now some may claim the ealier verses were abrogated by the later ones. But can the word of God ever be abrogated?
Prophet's own uncle refused to accept Islam. How did he treat him should give us something to ponder.
zia m, That was splendid! Thank you very much. So far, really the best on the subject of the Shia-Sunni divide I've ever heard. I hope a lot of people will come and listen to and learn from it.
@zia m. I would propose that if a religion has two faces, it cannot be a pure message from all knowing, wise, just God.
So, we'll have to examine if Islam has two faces. However this is a very vast topic. May be we take one aspect of this topic at a time. I'll open new discussion threads on each one of these topics, so that we can have comprehensive discussion on each one of them. Topics are
1: Are any verses of Quran abrogated (mansookh)
2: Is there any reality in our beloved prophet being two different personalities. One in Makkah and one in Madina
3: What is Isalm's stance on the topics listed in my above post.
