  1. Report: US suspending millions in military aid for Pakistan
    Jul 10, 2011

Washington - The United States is suspending about one-third of its aid to the Pakistan military to increase pressure on Islamabad on the fight against militants and the terrorist network, The New York Times reported late Saturday.

A total of 800 million dollars in aid and equipment could be either suspended or outright cancelled, according to three unnamed US officials quoted by the newspaper. Pakistan currently receives more than 2 billion dollars in military aid from the US every year.

Relations with Pakistan have become increasingly tense after the secret US raid into Pakistan in May that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Pakistan has expelled 100 US military trainers and public sentiment against the US has grown.

At the same time, Washington has lost confidence in Pakistan's commitment to the counter-terrorism fight.

Tensions grew in recent days after the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, told reporters that he believed that Pakistan intelligence officials had directed the killing of a journalist who wrote about terrorist infiltration into the Pakistan army.

Part of the possible cutbacks stem from refusal by Pakistan to accept some equipment, and other aid has been held up by the expulsion of the trainers, the Times story said.

Another parcel of the aid that could be affected is the 300 million dollars the US pays Pakistan to underwrite the costs of deploying more than 100,000 soldiers along the border with Afghanistan, which is a hot bed of militant activity.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned last month in testimony before Congress that the US was not prepared to continue military aid 'at the pace we were providing it unless and until we see certain steps taken.'

  2. If there's any truth in the above, this could be the real making of Pakistan and its armed forces. Get them to stand on their own two feet at long last, instead of counting on the west debt-economy to prop them up till kingdom come.

This will only be the half of the good news. We also BEG them to stop the "civilian" help too.

Civilian help=Filling the pockets of the politicians.

  6. Scandinavian, this is simply a matter of time. I thought you knew like me that this government's days are seriously numbered and that the next incoming government would rather cut its throat than take foreign fiat money in lieu of sovereignty.

  7. Pakistan: US suspends $800m of military aid
    Breaking news

The US says it is withholding some $800m of military aid to Pakistan.
White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley told ABC's This Week programme that Pakistan had "taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid".

"Until we get through these difficulties, we will hold back some of the money that the American taxpayers have committed to give them."

He said there was a "lot of pain" in Pakistan over the US raid that killed Osama Bin Laden in the country in May.

Pakistan's increasingly "close and effective defense ties" established with China during the past decade will allow Islamabad to "fill the gap" arising from the prospect of reduced military aid from the United States, a senior Pakistani official said on Sunday after reports emerged of cuts of up to $800 million in U.S. aid.

On Sunday, the senior Pakistani official who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity following the Times report said, "This tightening of U.S. military aid was expected. That's where our long-term relations with China will help to meet this gap."

Western diplomats, however, said that Pakistan's worsening relations with the U.S. will only cause harm to its interests irrespective of the extent of the support that it receives from China.

"The US has a long history of giving economic and military assistance to Pakistan, which by far outpaces China in dollar terms," said one Western diplomat in Islamabad who spoke to CBS News on condition of anonymity. "Worsening ties with the U.S. could push Pakistan towards isolation.

"I don't think it's wise for Pakistan to be playing down the importance of the U.S. as a partner, just because there have been some defense deals with China," added the diplomat.

Do us favour Mr Western Diplomat and take a look at your own economies before worrying about Pakistan.

  10. aftab, spoken like a true Pakistani! They're trying to scare us in every way possible. Upto us now to refuse all intimidation. Our army is not going to suffer irreparable loss if this stupid aid is suspended. Stick to your guns, men, stick to your guns.

This is not a good news.

This means the relations are having serious problems and probably that has something to do with Pakistan asking US training staff to leave the country and shamsi base etc., although awam does not know why relations have deteriorated.

    Absolutely great news!

I have a weird example to describe Pakistan's situation. Have you guys seen the (cartoon) movie called Rio? This bird owned by its caring master never learns how to fly as it never 'had to'. It used to drag and jump around to perform its every day chores. It never even missed the art of flying since it never knew how it felt. Then one day it fell from the sky with its feet tied to another bird (his lover). The bird named "Blu" had no option but to fly or it would collapse to the grounds of Brazilian rainforest with his soulmate. Thats when the bird musters all his courage and swings and flutters his wings. The bird finally flies and saves itself and its lover from a horrible death.

The only difference I see between Blu and Pakistan is that Blu had a 'caring' master :)
