    Great.. this was the time to change direction, to reign in the military.

    Instead of reducing the defence budget, our govt tries to make the boys happy.

    If the military failed to protect the nation with $ 5 billion..what's the guaratee they will be successful with $6 billion.

    And this probably does not include the naaz nakray of our retired jurnails. And the land which the military just gets for free.

    It (Budget) earmarked 495 billion rupees ($5.7 billion) for defence, an 11 per cent increase on the current year.

    Our military make-up for the future should be the following:

    Air Force - Take away all the fighter jets and replace them with Para Hand Gliders.

    Army - Dispose off all the tanks and heavy armor and replace them with Toyota Hi-Lux Technicals with a heavy caliber gun mounted on it. Replace all the hand held weapons of our soldiers with GHULAILS (Catapult!!)

    Navy - Junk all the warships and give our sailor dingy boats.

    So why doesn't this "democratic" government do something? It is their responsibility first and foremost.

    @just_one,

    Forget this democratic government. If there was an iota of shame left with our military brass, they should have tied a noose around their necks and left their stinking corpses dangling from a fan.

    It was anyone's guess; Army engineered this event itself to garnered falling support and sympathies. It was very small price they paid for their existence and 'livelihood'.

    While the policy over WOT is debatable but I have a few technical points:

    1. The military originated from the bureacratic style of the British Armed Forces whose performance in the 1st and 2nd world wars is not worth mentioning.

    2. The military only plans on paper but they can never execute their plans.

    3. Commercial interests harm professionalism.

    4. It is not considered a national army by most ethnicities.

    It's about time parliamentarians took the responsibilities seriously and put a cap on the Military Budget, enough is enough this poor country cannot absorb this gunda tax anymore.

    اس پارلیمنٹ سے کسی اچھے یا کرک فیصلے کی امید رکھنا تو دیوانے کے خواب کے مترادف ہے . آج اس پارلیمنٹ کو ایک تاریخی موقعہ ملا تھا کہ معاملات کو اپنے کنٹرول میں لے لیکن کل کے بجٹ اجلاس کی کاروائی دیکھ کر پتا چل چکا ہے کہ ان تلوں میں تیل نہیں صرف بدبو ہے . انتہائی گھٹیا انداز میں اپوزشن کی کھوکھلی نعرے بازی. اختلاف کرنے کا انداز ایاز امیر کا بھی تھا جو اپنے ڈسک پر احتجاج کے طور پر کھڑا رہا اس کے علاوہ تو مچھلی مندی ہی تھی. تعلیم کا بجٹ ہی بتا رہا ہے کہ ان حکمرانوں کا منشور ہی عوام کو جاہل رکھ کر اپنے زندوں مردوں کے چوری ڈاکےبچانا اور چار دن کے بچوں کو بادشاہتیں سونپنا ہے.

    @siddiqi,

    Expecting righteousness in governmental affairs is stupidity at its worse. Government doesn't expect murderers to stop committing murders. It takes action against them and ensures such events don't take place.

    Not to compare army with murderers, if the generals could get bigger funding they will go for it. Don't expect people to be saint, expect the government to do its job rather.

    Corrupt leaders like Zardari who do not have roots in the public (despite all the claims of public mandate) and come to power through fraud election, cannot possibly put checks and balances on the army. This is more true for leaders like Nawas Sharif, who actually worked for the army at some point.

    Thus, only a government that comes as a result of free and fair election and having the moral authority based on public support, will ensure good governance and reign in all institutions.

    It is very important to realize that the fundamental responsibly lies on the democratic government and none other.

    a) Zaradai corruption has been proved in court headed by IK & haroon rasheed and hameed gul type people .

    b) PPP is in power for 4th time but has no roots in the people. Mashallah.

    c) IK & co will decide which elections were fair like they never raised objectoin to 2002 elections . Zabardast.

    d) NS worked for ARMY one time. Very right. Whats about supporting Mush in referendum ?

    Bahi, instead of contining with allegations , do the homework , participate in elections and get mandate from masses. ( i totally agree that mandate of masses in pakistan has never been accepted , but u don't speak against those who do so )

    More bad news...

    On top of the Rs495 billion officially-sanctioned defence budget, the government has allocated an additional Rs150 billion for the armed forces, almost half of which was billed under the Armed Forces Development Programme.

    A senior official of the finance ministry, citing the ‘Budget-in-Brief’ document, said the total defence and security allocation comes to around Rs645 billion, which is almost 23.8 per cent of the total budget. In addition, Rs73.2 billion would be paid from civilian accounts on army pensions – a practice initiated by Musharraf in 2000. By adding the three allocations – stated budget, contingent liabilities and army pensions – the total allocations total Rs718 billion, almost 26 per cent of the total budget.

    We will never be able to progress by investing this much in defence.

    @aftab

    And I dont think this includes all the other free stuff ( ie Land, Health Facilites, Kids Education, Golf Club memberships ) Military personnel get for free or almost free

    As they say other countries have military and Pakistan military has a country

    Our budget is so minuscule that we should get rid of it altogether(read sarcasm), and go back to sticks and stones. If military wants to get out of this mess or wants to buy new toys then it should do from its own vast reserves, or get money clawed back from the corrupt generals.

    Brilliant! Bravo...why not compare it with the expenses we the poor awam have to pay for burdened through heavy taxes, the lavish living style of our voted parliament/s (s-stands for extended family/relatives enjoying benefits/rewards/perquisites, at par with MPAs and MNAs) and the senate.

  18. Keep Kashmir issue alive and continue getting increase every year in their budget; there will be no cut in military budget unless Kashmir issue is resolved.
