    Dear all,

Pakistan is facing power shortages. Load shedding seems to be there as a constant phenomenon in our lives. Our politicians can give us only their pack of lies.
    So..

What we can do? Does anybody know if solar energy is feasible for homes having power requirements of 2.0 kwatts or less? What is your opinion on that?

  2. Yes, it is. You can have such a system that can cater for homes having power requirements even more than 5kw. Your location and your budget are important factors to achieve this goal.

Pakistan is an ideal location for solar energy but for now it's a costly option. The problem is electricity is produced from 'photovoltaics' which involves semiconductor and at the moment only a few countries have fabrication facilities namely USA,Taiwan,Ireland, Israel, china, etc.

Ok, the main question is of feasibility.

Is the price comparable with power tariffs of WAPDA?

Is this system (solar energy) cheap over a period of say 10 years?

What is the initial installation cost?

Can a Pakistani with average income afford it? Or is it only a priviledge for the high income group in Pakistan?

There's an NGO in Pakistan working on this project. You can get an idea of the cost on following link.

Pakistani Govt needs issues like that as a mind conversion tool from real issues.
Now its going to be cold and i think they should chalk out a plan further for Gas Load shedding.
May be this is good treatment for the ppl of gravistan.....

Gas Load Shedding is another trick by our government to make us ready to accept gas import from other countries so that they make their commission.

MSohail83 Thanks for the link, I shall check it.

  9. The use of PV Solar Panels is one of the many ways to tap Solar energy (here light is directly converted into a direct current). It is costly in comparison to another system to harness Solar energy. This system uses Convergence of sunlight onto an area that happens to be within the focal point of parabolic reflectors. Very high temperatures are possible that can be converted into current both by indirect/direct conversation of heat into energy (power). This system is much cheaper than PV Solar Panels and is being used at an industrial level.

  10. The following books are recommended as a good read:

2- APPLICATION OF SOLAR TECHNOLOGY TO TODAY’S ENERGY NEEDS VOL-II
    3- SOLAR THERMAL POWER GENERATION
    4- SOLAR SITE EVALUATION

there is certainly a huge potential of using solar energy for powering homes in Pakistan. not just because there is sunlight throughout the year but because we also have the workmanship to utilize this huge potential.

i know a person who has a business in college road, Rawalpindi. he was the one who designed the solar energy system in a village near Islamabad. and i believe there are more people who can do the same.

the only thing missing is sincerity from the leadership that would combine these two (the potential and workmanship).

Are you saying solar is cheaper than coal? Give me some data instead of deleting my comment.

  14. If you have something to say regarding solar, well and good. Anything not relating to the topic will be removed. Want to be part of the discussion, than come prepared on your own. If you insist posting other than the subject here than that will be taken as 'diversion tactics'. You have been warned to comply with the COC.

Believe me i have lost enough money on solar stocks.Chinese are the cheapest source on solar panels but they prefer coal over solar for their domestic use.

  16. Than why dont you read through the books that are on offer, just in case. Coal is not the subject here. There are already two threads afloat on the subject of Thar coal. You can post your comments there instead.

  17. usage of solar energy is a great idea and its not impractical .
but the problem is ,lack of interest ,on our Govt part.
which seems like less interested in resolving issues .
rather it seems,it wants us to be in the grasp of energy crisis and prices hike ...
so we wont be able to pay attention, what at foreign policy level ,our Govt is doing?
