Despite the fact that there are around 2.7 million National Tax Number (NTN) holders in the country but actually only 685,000 pay tax. These include around 16,000 to 17,000 corporate taxpayers.
KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has detected a large number of commercial and business establishments, which are not filing tax returns.
Under a major policy shift the FBR is now working hard on non-filers of tax returns rather than on taxpayers, who are already filing returns and paying some tax to the national exchequer.
The data collected from power utility companies from across the country with regard to commercial connections disclosed startling facts.
The FBR has come to know that ten different power utility companies, which are operating in major cities, have a total of 2.757 million commercial connections.
However, when the same data of power connections was compared with the existing number of taxpayers it transpired that only 0.686 million commercial and business establishments are filing tax returns.
The data collected by the FBR from power utility companies when compared with the data from 13 regional tax offices with regard to taxpayers’ filing returns and that with commercial connections a huge gap of 2.071 million was noted.

Frankly, I find this disturbing -> 2.7 million people have NTN and only 685,000 out of them pay taxes ? In a nation of 180 million people ?
WOW!!!! -> only 2.7 million registered tax payers out of a nation of 180 million people.
WOW!!!! -> 16,000 - 17,000 out of the 2.7 million who are corporates don't pay taxes.
