ISLAMABAD, July 25: An American national hit and killed a motorcyclist on 7th Avenue on Sunday and then drove on dragging the entangled motorcycle to his house in F-7/3.
City police said they had approached the American embassy for the custody of the accused, identified as Tire Johnson, an officer attached to the embassy’s force protection department, for investigating the pre-dawn hit-and-run accident.
Police said 17-year-old Jawadur Rehman was standing along his motorcycle on the kerb side of the 7th Avenue when a speeding white Toyota Lexus (STR-6300) hit and killed him on the spot. Other motorcyclists present at the scene gave a chase to the four-wheeler after it drove off with the motorcycle meshed in its front bumper.
It were the chasers who reported to police that the foreigner driving the vehicle had stopped in Street 7 of F-7/3 and then walked to a house in Street 9. Soon afterwards, an American embassy car, without any registration plate, arrived at the house and took Johnson, a senior American Army officer, to the embassy in the Diplomatic Enclave.
Police found the vehicle with the mangled motorcycle in Street 7 and established that it was owned by a resident of Lahore and had been rented out by a car hiring company.
The police said the victim, a resident of G-7/4, suffered head injuries and died on the spot.
His family members gathered in front of Aabpara police station and lodged a protest demanding the arrest of the accused. The police registered a case against the American national.
Meanwhile, according to the police, the Pakistani staff of the American embassy approached the victim’s family for a meeting with the US diplomats on Monday to settle the issue.
