What is so great about democracy ??

Except for the freedom to choose the government there is no reason why people cannot be as free under an autocracy as in a democracy.

Democracy does not do very well at representing the people. In first past the post systems a government may not even have the support of a majority of those who voted not even including that many will not have votes and many more will not have the vote. This means that it is often a small minority of the population who determines which party gets in to government. Once they are there they are rarely representative of the people as they have several years to do what they like. Yes they need to think about re-election but that simply means they need to do more that the people like than the people dislike (or else have a good advertising campaign).

While this is mostly found in democracy it is not something that has to be exclusive to democracies. Autocracies can potentially be transparent and have checks and balances they however often do not simply because an autocracy often has the time, and the willingness to use force to prevent these from occurring.

In some countries democracy seems to be increasingly about money. The U.S. is the obvious example where millions are spent on elections with big events and glitzy advertising campaigns. This is not what democracy should be about and it discourages other countries from moving along the path to democracy. Indeed it undermines the very idea of democracy. Democracy when money is involved to the extent that it is in the U.S.A. becomes elitist and corporatist because only the elite and rich businessmen can afford to fund the campaigns for congress let alone for the presidency. The 2008 campaign for the White House cost $1.6 billion and the whole 2008 election including senate and house of representatives races cost $5.3 billion. Autocracies obviously avoid this immense expense by avoiding elections.

Autocracies are better at big projects, they can get things done and as such they are likely to be better at creating economic growth if they have the will. In an autocracy there are not the avenues for dissent that can block building projects, the police or troops can be used to clear protests that in the west would slow down large infrastructure projects. As a consequence of this all the infrastructure that is needed to create a modern economy can be produced quicker and cheaper than would be the case in a democracy. Also the resource base of the country can be accessed faster (no pesky environmentalists preventing drilling and mining!) and used more efficiently.

Democracy was always meant to work for a small, publically spirited, nation of biologically related, culturally related, linguistically related, folk. So long as everyone was related, it was doubtful one group would wish the enslavement or destruction of another, or that one group would routinely underperform the other and become a burden on their neighbors, or that there would be irreconcilable differences between the differing political parties. The moment democracy metastizised to include such basically different groups as Punjabis, Pashtuns, and Sindhis and Muhajirs, we created a new democratic curse — tribalism and the unified voting of a tribe to gain wealth, power, and prestige from the competing tribes. 98% of blacks voted for Obama, not because they just so happened to think he was the best qualified candidate, but because they felt he would support his fellow blacks once in power. This kind of democracy devolves to a tribal head-count, or two wolves and a sheep voting over what’s for dinner. Three wolves or three sheep can vote on that matter rather fairly — a mixed-species democracy cannot.

Pakistani rulers are like a metallic rod with a freezing cold at one end and a red hot at the other. This rod has been inserted into the public @ss for the last 64 years. We have only been perceived to choose the end of this rod.

People use their conventional wisdom (or they are told to do it so) to choose the cold end of this rod. Not do they know that this freezing end of democracy will stick inside them for a long time and they will not have a choice to take it out.

Next time, choose the red hot end. It will be painful but your reflexes will force you to take it out.

جمہوریت پاکستان، پاکستانی عوام اور ہماری آنے والی نسلوں کے روشن مستقبل کی ضمانت ہے. جمہوریت شخصی آمریت سے ہزار درجے بہتر ھے. جمہوری نظام ایک ایسے تالاب کی طرح ہوتا ھے جسکا پانی بلکل صاف اور شفاف ہوتا ھے اور جسمیں آپکو خوبصورت مچھلیاں اور بد صورت کچھوے صاف دکھائی دیتے ہیں. عوام، میڈیا، عدلیہ اور انسانی حقوق کی تنظیموں کو اس تالاب کے پاس جانے اور جھانک کر اندر دیکھنے کی آزادی ہوتی ھے. آپ چاہیں تو اپنے ووٹ اور آئیں و قانون کی مد سے پانی گندہ کرنے والے کچھووں کو نکال باہر پھینک سکتے ہیں اور یہ آپکے دائرہ اختیار میں ھے. جبکہ شخصی آمریت ایک ایسے تالاب کی طرح ھے جسکا پانی گدلا ہوتا ھے. آپکو پتہ ہی نہیں ہوتا کہ پانی کے اندر کیا کچھ ہو رہا ہے؟ کون ڈالروں کے عوض قوم کا مستقبل غیر ملکی آقاؤں کو بیچ رہا ہے؟ کونسی خوبصورت مچھلی ھے اور کونسا بد صورت کچھوا ھے؟ تالاب سے بد صورت کچھووں کو باہر نکال پھینکنا تو دور کی بات عوام، میڈیا، عدلیہ اور انسانی حقوق کی تنظیموں کو اس تالاب کے پاس جانے اور جھانک کر اندر دیکھنے کی بھی آزادی نہیں ہوتی ھے. جمھوریت میں آپ گندے حکمرانوں کو اپنے ووٹ سے یا اپنے پر زور اعتجاج سے یا عدلیہ کے ذریعے حکومت سے باہر نکال سکتے ہیں لیکن شخصی آمریت میں آپ حکمرانوں کے پاس نہیں پھڑک سکتے اور نہ ہی انہیں گھر بھیج سکتے ہیں. جمہوریت میں حکومتی تبدیلی پر امن ہوتی ہے جبکہ آمریت میں حکومتی تبدیلی خون خرابے سے ہوتی ہے جیسا کہ آج کل مڈل ایسٹ میں ہو رہا ہے

شخصی آمریت نے اس ملک کا بیڑہ غروق کیا ہے. مشرقی پاکستان کو بنگلہ دیش بنایا اور بلوچستان میں عوام کے حقوق غضب کیے. قیام پاکستان کے فورا بعد جمہوریت دشمنوں نے اقتدار پر قبضہ کر لیا. ہر آمر ہمیں تاریکیوں میں دھکیل گیا. ہم جمہوریت کے ہمیشہ خواہاں رہے ہیں لیکن آمروں نے ہمیں جمہوریت بھی اس طرح دی ہے کہ انکی پلاننگ کے تحت ہم جمہوریت سے بھی نفرت کرنے لگے ہیں. آج ہم اس مقام پر کھڑے ہیں کہ ہم دوبارہ آمروں کو خوش آمدید کہنے پر آمادہ ہیں. آپ مانیں یا نہ مانیں زرداری جیسے کرپٹ آدمی کو حکومت دینا آمروں کی سوچی سمجھی پلاننگ تھی تاکہ عوام تھوڑے عرصے بعد ہی جمہوریت سے بیزار ہو جائیں اور وہ دوبارہ ملک فتح کر لیں. زردری اور نواز شریف نے بھی عوام کو جمہوریت سے بیزار کروانے میں کوئی کسر نہیں چھوڑی. اس پورے جمہوری عرصے میں عوام کو کبھی محسوس ہی نہیں ہو سکا کہ وہ بھی کہیں حکومت میں شامل ہیں. عوام تو کیا ممبران پارلیمنٹ سے بھی کبھی انکی ریے نہیں پوچھی گئی. رشتہ داروں، یاروں اور خوشامدیوں کا ٹولا مرکز اور صوبوں میں پارلیمنٹ، اسمبلیوں اور عوام سے بالا بالا ہی سارے فیصلے کرنے لگا. لوٹ مار کا ایک ایسا سلسلہ شروع ہوا کہ عوام کی چیخیں نکل گئیں. نواز شریف اپنے مخصوس مقاصد کے لیے عوام کو چیخیں مارتے دیکھکر اس بے حس ملاح کی طرح خوش ہوتا رہا جو تنگ کرنے شرارتی بچوں کو دریا میں ڈوبتے دیکھکر مسکراتا ہے. زرداری نے اپنے اور اپنے ساتھیوں کے احتساب کی تمام کوششیں ناکام بنا دی اور فوج خاموش تماشائی بنی رہی کیونکہ اسی میں اسکا مفاد تھا. فوج کی پلاننگ اور زرداری کی ہوس پسندی، کرپشن اور آئین شکنی نے عوام کو جمہوریت سے نفرت کرنے پر مجبور کر دیا. عدلیہ جسے عوام نے قربانیاں دیکر بحال کروایا تھا خاموش تماشائی بنی بیٹھی رہی اور فوج کی ایک ٹیلی فون دھمکی پر ڈھیر ہوگئی بلکہ عملا اسے بحال کروانے والی فوج کی زر خرید غلام گئی. فوج سے تو کوئی گلہ ہی نہیں کیونکہ اسے تو جمہوریت ایک نظر نہیں بھاتی. وہ اب براہ راست اقتدار پر قبضہ کرنے کی بجائے پس پردہ رہ کر حکومت کنٹرول کرنا چاہتی کہتی ہے. عوام سب کچھ سمجھ رہے ہیں اور وہ جمہوریت سے محبت کرتے ہیں اور اسے اپنے روشن مستقبل کی ضمانت سمجھتے ہیں اور اسمیں کوئی شک بھی نہیں ہے کہ جمہوریت ہی پاکستان، پاکستانی عوام اور ہماری آنے والی نسلوں کے روشن مستقبل کی ضمانت دے سکتی ہے. پاکستانی قوم کو اب اپنی زمہ داریاں نبھانی ہیں اور سیاسی وابستگیوں اور ذاتی مفادات سے بالاتر ہو کر ملک و قوم سے مخلص اور ایماندار لوگوں کا انتخاب کرنا ہے

کچوھے ظاہر میں بدنما ہو سکتے ہیں
مگر کیا انکا دل شفاف نہیں ہو سکتا
کیا خوبصورت مچھلیاں اندر ایک مکروہ دل نہیں رکھ سکتیں
سنجیدہ بات یہ ہے کے اس نظام میں عوام چاہیں تو ووٹ دیں یا نہ دیں نہیں ہوتا ہے
اس نظام میں عوام ووٹ دیتے ہیں
اور ووٹ دینے کو اپنا ایک انتہائی اہم فریضہ تصور کرتے ہیں
عوام کی بھرپور شمولیت اور انکی طاقت اس نظام کا حسن ہے

یہ بد صورتی اور خوبصورتی کا استعارہ میں نے سیاست میں گندے اور اچھے لوگوں کے کے استعمال کیا تھا. اسکا حقیقتا مطلب کچھوے کی بد صورتی اور مچھلی کی خوبصورتی نہ تھا

میں خدا کی مخلوق کو بد صورت کہنے والا کون ہوتا ہے؟ وہ جسے چاہے جیسے مرضی بنائے

Actually some aristocrats consider themself superior to masses and hence have more belief in aristocracy than the collective wisdom of masses.

Before cursing the democratic system , especially with reference to Pakistan, we first need to see that whether we ever had democracy .

In my oponion there was only one election which was not rigged in 1970 but then its results were not accepted by BAHDUR FAUJ. Afterwards , BAHDUR FAUJ never took the risk of fair & free elections , and thats why we have always had controlled pesudo democracy in order to malign democracy.

A failed system of governance has been shoved down our throats...it is failing miserably everywhere...yet the notion, I repeat the notion of "voice of the people" is what makes everyone dizzy with praises.

Marassi , idiots and thugs are running the governments everywhere while "sharif admi" :-) and the real leaders are helplessly watching with one stupid vote in their hand.

We need to imporve our governance model.

Why dont thugs always come to power in western democracies.

How come such thugs are ruling in most of Middle East,
Africa, some parts of Latin America and some parts of Asia.

میں نے ساری عمر جمہوریت کے قصیدے پڑھے اور لکھے اور اس کی سزا بھی پائی لیکن اس جمہوریت کا کیا کروں کہ سارا سیاسی منظر ہی دل شکن ہے۔ تین کروڑ چھتیس لاکھ جعلی ووٹوں پر اسمبلیاں وجود میں آئیں اور ان میں سے سینکڑوں اراکین اسمبلیاں جعلی ڈگریوں کی زد میں آگئے۔ گویا اسمبلیوں کا قانونی جواز جعلی ووٹوں نے اور اخلاقی جواز جھوٹ بولنے والی جعلی ڈگریوں نے ختم کر دیا۔ پارلیمینٹ اس قدر غیر موثر کہ اس کی قراردادوں کو ردی کی ٹوکری میں پھنیک دیا جاتاہے۔ حکومتوں کی کارکردگی لوڈشیڈنگ، لاقانونیت، بڑھتی ہوئی غربت اور مہنگائی اور بے روزگاری اور کرپشن کی بے مثال مثالیں پیش کر رہی ہے۔ پنجاب میں ڈینگی کے بعد دوائیوں کے ردعمل سے لوگ اور خاص طور پر غریب لوگ مر رہے ہیں۔ کراچی میں ٹارگٹ کلنگ شروع ہوچکی ہے۔ اندرون سندھ ابھی تک سیلاب کی تباہ کاریوں کا علاج نہیں ہوسکا۔ بلوچستان میں ایک طرف ٹارگٹ کلنگ تو دوسری طرف شہریوں کو اٹھانے کا سلسلہ جاری ہے۔ خیبر پختون خوا میں تشدد کی نئی لہر خون بہا رہی ہے، لوگ مر رہے ہیں اور ہر طرف موت کے سائے لہرا رہے ہیں۔ مہران بینک سکینڈل اور آئی ایس آئی کی سیاستدانوں کو ننگی رشوت، ننگی تلوار بن کر لٹک رہی ہے۔ ان سب پر مستزاد وزیراعظم توہین عدالت کے کٹہرے میں کھڑے ہیں۔ اب آپ ہی بتائیں ان حالات میں میں اپنی جمہوریت کے لئے کلمہ خیر کہاں سے لاؤں؟

If you follow the evolution of modern democracy , it started with Britian , it took them 200 years to fine tune. The institutions which support democracy were built and they kept improving it , we think we can just import it and make it work.....we are blindly following west , where it is failing badly and has become only self-serving. Bigest democracy in the world is the biggest lie for the voters , where corporations and their funding to different parties and lobbying firm decides the fate not votes
