  2. Zardari already gave the statement that he would be from Sindh and would be Jiyala. But i really think he should be some one from Baluchistan.

To save Pakistan its very important that this time Head of the federation should be from the most neglected province Baluchistan. I have seen news on Jang Pakistan that people are trying to convince Sardar Attaullah mengal. That will be very Good news for all Pakistan to save Baluchistan with in Pakistan.

Why are we discussing this, please clear your concept. We hasve perliamentary system of Government, prrsident is just a symbolic head of state. He should have no power, we must wage a campaign to take back powers from the office of President to go back towards real parliamentary democracy.

  6. A civilian prime minister with too much power can also be a dictator, believe it or not. This has happened before in Pakistan.

Pakistan is full of dictators; small, medium and large. You will find them in all sizes, from head of household to muhalla leader all are dictators. They adopted the top brass attitude. While living in USA I have plenty of interaction with both indians and pakistanis. You can see the clear attitude difference between both, see an Indian family husband, wife and kids you can see a kind of equality between spouses. And then see the same Pakistani family, you can see that the wife act like a subservient to her husband. This is mindset, gift from contineous dictatorship.
I agree that the Prime Ministers did become too powerful in past, Bhutto Sr. and NS both act same. The queation is, were they given an opportunity to go back to electroate? NO, they were forcefully removed. If system was give a chance to take it natural evoluation then electrotae would have rejected them automatically. System wasn't given a chance, there is nothing wrong with the system provided it were give a chance to complete its natural cycle. We do not give a chance to system to complete it natural cycle and then blame that the system isn't working. If you come back to me 90's rhetoric, then would ask you did any of those governments were allowed to complete its tenure. NO, then why are we blaming them. Give them cycles of four five elections (not premature) but after every five years and then blame them if they do not deliver.

  8. Pakistanis have been brought up in an authoritative culture.
Just examine the attitude and behavior of our parents, Teachers (from elementary to post-graduate level), our Mullas in the mosques, just teach obedience and submission.
To ask a question or challenge their commands, is discouraged and considered as bad mannerism.

Very true I still remember my school days when you get canning on the palm back of hand was more painfull than front. We used to show our manliness that it was just a touch of feather and noting else. And who can forget MURGA, it was actually more humiliating that canning.

  11. Rafi,

I strongly agree with the first paragraph, our society is not democratic, but, disagree in that the rulers came out of our society, they themselves were a product of the society, not the other way roung.

Regarding the completion of the cycle and the continuation of the process. Why were the people happy every time the govts. collapsed? Why was it that EVERYTIME martial law was imposed and prime ministers were sent packing, the people welcomed it and distributed sweets? Why is it the the people always welcomed the dissolution of assemblies in the 90s? Why did they show such impatience? Why did the politicians always collaborate with the establishment to overthrow the govts and dissolve assemblies? Why did people write letters to generals to wrap up the political setups? The point is that our society itself isnt democratic, nor, does it believe in democratic values or tolerance or patience.

Democracy assumes the people are right, but, they arent always right. Democracy assumes the people will make the right choices, but, in our case, they havent. They always supported dissolution of govts. that were only 2 or 3 years old, they supported the abrogation of the constituition, they supported the imposition of military rule.

The society is flawed, and, the rulers are just a reflection of that.

  12. My dear beena,
No where I supported or mentioned about Zardari to be the future president of Pakistan.
My closest choice could be Sardar Atta-Ullah Mengal or Justice Iftikhar Chaudry or some one of the same status.
(I am out of Pakistan for the last 20 years and might not be in a better position to understand the ground realities of the existing Pakistan and gauge the intellectual potentials of young generation. Most of my information and assessments depends upon the Electronic Media and telephone calls from Pakistan)

    Secular
I won't disagree with you. But answer lies in the question, why people get impatient because they do not beleive in democratic cycle. Why they don't beleive in democratic cycle because they haven't went through that cycle yet. Once they complete that circle they will belive in it and then they will not distribute sweets. Look at USA George Bush's rating is in 20's. People are waiting patiently for November; obviusly Bush exhausted his term limit but his party nominee (John Mccain) will have to face the nation with an answer that he will not pursue Bush's policies. If Obama get elected then it will tell us that people rejected previous governments policies. They had seen the cycle over and over, Pakistanis must feel the cycle once, then they will never go for another option.

  14. @Dear Shiekh sahib,
    i never said that u r supporting Zardari ....
with the kind of wisdom and intellect i have seen in ur posts i cant expect u to do so.

but since u r a PPP supporter for the past 50 years ...so i assume that u might support the presidential candidate from PPP only.....

i do support Iftikhar Chudhri ...but i have some reservations about him being too politicized by now.....
anyways i want him to see him back on his post as Cheif Justice Of Pakistan....
president of Pakistan shud b some one less political then Aitzaz ....
i have lost all the respect for him...since he has backed out from his promises ....

    1. Does office of President in Important?
    2. Do you still want two bosses to run the country?
    3. Why aren't we want to strenghten the office of Prime Minister?
Can't we understand this issue that the Office of President created trouble since 1988. We need Chuadhry Fazle Ilahi and Rafiq Tarrar type president. We don't need Ghulasm Ishaq Khan, Farooq Leghari or Musharaf.

  16. @Rafi dear ,
we shudnt be bothered about the next president....
u cud b right if we have a normal or ideal condition...
but unfortunately ....the scheme of things we r living in is not at all ideal....

we have a history of presidents having a sword of 58 2b in thier hands all the time.
so either we need to do something with constitution to amend this powerful cluase ....
or we shud choose our president carefully......

  18. @ rafi.
    Here you go.
In a Parliamentary System the President (the Queen or king in the UK) is the custodian of Constitution and Head of the State.
The Prime Minister is head of the Government.
President is just like a father and Prime Minister acts like mother to manage the household.
The father could divorce a mother, and bring in a new one, if she is incapable to run the house hold properly, provided he has been allocated with such power and authority by the majority of the members of the house and family.
The father should be kicked out of the house, if he makes the changes just for his personal sexual pleasure.

  19. @Dear Shiekh sahib,
    i 100 % agrees with u ...like ur analogy....
the problem is that father has been hated by all the family members but not willing to go.....what the family members shud do in that case?

  20. Mr. Rafi,

We should strengthen parliament, not prime minister. Prime minister has enough power. The parliament has none.

Has anyone heard of any parliamentary proceedings other than those for impeachment?

Has even a single parliamentary committee been formed yet? Do these committees even have any power?

Even when people see this cycle, they will not be happy, I can assure you that. Now, lets assume, the political process continues, and this assembly and govt. finishes its tenure and so does the next one and two elections are held. And, then the military decides to overthrow the govt. Do you think the people will oppose it? No they wont. Because they expect unrealistic miracles from govts. They expect too much, they know too little. They want bread at Rs. 2 and petrol at Rs. 30. They want Pakistan to take on America. They want the govt. to do everything for them. They dont understand economics or diplomacy or international relations. They will still support general and expect him to be a Messiah.

See, my argument is, the thing that enables true and proper democracy, is the economy and education (knowledge and awareness). And, therefore, my argument is, we must focus on the economy and education, regardless of whether the govt. is civilian or military. When people become wealthy and educated, generals cant rule them, just like Sardars or Jirgas cant decide their fate or rule them. This is why China today is more democratic then China 30 years ago. And, this is why China 30 years into the future will be more democratic than China today (a complete democracy by then I would say). I supported General Musharraf because he delivered a dramatic improvement in areas of both economy and education compared to his civilian counterparts, thereby, making Pakistan just a bit more capable of being a democracy in the long run. That and his dramatic social liberalisation of Pakistan which was become mullah-istan after Gen. Zias rule. These are the two big reasons I support him. Obviously, we need rapid and strong economic and educational development CONSISTENTLY for another 2 decades to become a properly functioning democracy.

yes, father can divorce the mother and bring another wife but wife can also do this. she can use her right of Khula (as islamic rule) and live with her childern. if father is corrupt, nasty and dictator, she can prove it and get rid from him.

Yes to Education, look at Indai they built instituions since 60's. They are getting fuits now. Education will autimatically boost economy. But secular, it is not only long term degree program that need focus. Short term vocational trainig will help a lot.

  23. My dear aristotle,
    You are right.
Unfortunately in Pakistan each time Mother becomes the victim of a cruel Father.
I guess this is for the first time in Pakistan, (if I am correct) where Mother has challenged the potency and capability of Father, according to a constitutional process.
It will be really interesting to learn in the coming days, if Father manages to regain his potency with the help of Viagra.

    Dear All
I am feeling sad and frustrasted, this whole struggle was made to back Parliamentary democracy where President office will be a figurhead position. But apperently this may not going to happen. Once again center od power will be the office of Presidency and no one else than AZ will be responsible for that. Basically AZ himself will negate core principle of PPP i.e. Parliamentary Democracy. Why doesn't he become a Prime Minister and strenghten the office PM rather than Presidency. I see only reason i.e. he want indemnity because President isn't subject to prosecution while in the office.
