"Indians are being urged to hand over a note worth zero rupees when asked for a bribe, in a bid to stamp out corruption among officials."

should this be tried in pak?

what an idea... the briber too will get a zero in return! =)

"Transparency International India executive director Anupama Jha says while the note is an interesting way of tackling corruption, it is only a small step in fighting bribes."

jab goray ko russ-malai khilao to uss ka response b yehi hota hai... interesting... (get the point?) =D

i fail to understand how these notes will convince the officials to work without bribes... anyone wants to shed some light on the mechanics/technicalities of this 'strategy'?

  3. Yes, it is possible when one who bribes is over confident and the other who receives is blind.
Is currency the only way to bribe anyone?

    by shaming them?

I think what they are trying to do is create a popular movement against corruption, when the officials know their insistence on a bribe will cause a 100 people to gather around their office and protest they will be a little more hesitant in asking for bribes...maybe?

now that's a workable solution... but the question still stands, how will the zero-rupee note ensure this? that idea that JUST holding these zero-rupee notes will generate a movement in the masses, is wishful thinking, at the very least!

bro, the masses are mobilized on certain ideas, that are carried and presented by humans among them. the history is a witness to that phenomenon.

  7. Putting up a shameless to shame is like asking a professional beggar to stop begging that for him has developed into a habit.
Try it. He/she will grin back at you and ask for the real ones and not fakes!

well I have not carried out a survey on the effectiveness of the zero rupee note but from what little I understand it is giving a physical symbol to the abstract idea of accountability. A common man finds it easier to rally behind a "jhanda aur naara" simple concept like "roti kapra makaan" instead of the whole philosophy and maifesto of a party.

secondly it does have the number of the organization to call in case a bribe is demanded, it is smaller in size then a full pamphlet so is cheaper to print and is easier to carry around in your wallet. somebody demands a bribe from you and you put this in their hand, they will atleast be a little wary that with a phone call you could call people and media to hound them.

I think it's a super fit idea. It may not have any major impact in itself but it send a very important message that creative and innovative brains are beginning to work on the corruption issue, and that it is moving out of the sphere of empty election promises and into the sphere of proper initiative for change.

and it certainly achieves its basic objective which is to get people talking.
